Pontresina

Pontresina is about 405 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of roughly 5 hours 10 minutes across Switzerland to Chur and then over the Julier Pass into the Upper Engadine. The village lies in a side valley close to St. Moritz, at the foot of the Bernina massif, and makes a calm, elegant base for some of the most varied skiing in Graubünden. AirportsTransfers.ch offers a direct private transfer from the arrivals hall to your hotel, so you can watch the landscape change from lakes to high mountain valleys without worrying about connections.

  • Distance from GVA: about 405 km
  • Drive time: around 5 h 10
  • Border crossing: none
  • Ski areas: Diavolezza and Lagalb nearby, Corviglia and Corvatsch close by
  • Best for: glacier scenery, cross-country, a peaceful base near St. Moritz

The route from Geneva Airport

The motorway takes you along Lake Geneva, across the Plateau via Bern and on to Zurich, then east along Lake Zurich and Lake Walen and south to Chur. From Chur the road climbs over the Lenzerheide plateau and down to Tiefencastel, then up the Surses valley past Savognin and the Marmorera reservoir to Bivio. From there it crosses the Julier Pass, a high road that is kept open in winter, and descends to Silvaplana and the chain of lakes of the Upper Engadine. After passing St. Moritz, a short drive brings you to Pontresina. The pass section is the most demanding part of the journey and can be slowed by snowfall or strong wind; your chauffeur checks conditions before setting off and, if necessary, uses the Vereina car train via Klosters instead.

The ski areas

Pontresina has no large ski area of its own in the village, but it is surrounded by excellent options. A short drive up the Bernina road, the Diavolezza offers high-altitude skiing with views over the glaciers of Piz Palü and the Bernina group, and is known for the glacier descent towards Morteratsch, a classic itinerary best done with a guide. Opposite, the Lagalb is steeper and more rugged, appealing to strong skiers. In the other direction, St. Moritz's Corviglia and the Corvatsch above Silvaplana provide large, varied areas with everything from gentle blues to demanding runs. The regional lift pass and local buses and trains make it easy to move between them, so you can choose the mountain that suits the weather and your mood each day.

Pontresina is also one of the main cross-country centres of the Engadine, with trails running into the Val Roseg and along the valley floor towards the lakes, and a small practice slope for children right by the village. Winter walking and snowshoe routes are numerous, including the path into the Val Roseg, a long, quiet valley ending beneath glaciers.

The village

Pontresina is a long village of fine Engadine houses, some with sgraffito decoration, and grand hotels from the Belle Époque era, set on a sunny slope above the Flaz river. It is calmer and more understated than St. Moritz, which many visitors appreciate, while still offering a good range of hotels, restaurants and shops. The Bernina railway line passes through on its way over the Bernina Pass to Tirano in Italy, a famous scenic journey that makes a memorable day trip. The Morteratsch glacier is also reachable on foot via a winter path, giving a striking sense of the scale of the surrounding mountains.

When to go and practical tips

The Engadine season runs from late November to April, and the high altitude usually ensures good snow. January is cold and sunny, February is busy, and March offers long days and spring skiing on the glaciers. Saturday is the main changeover day, which increases traffic on the Julier route. Our vehicles have winter tyres and chains, and our drivers are familiar with high mountain passes. The Engadine is high and dry, so drink plenty of water, use sun protection and take the first day gently. Declare skis and luggage at booking.

Returning to Geneva

Plan for about five hours for the drive back, plus check-in time at the airport. An afternoon or evening flight is the most comfortable choice. Your chauffeur will confirm the pick-up time the day before and allow extra time if snow is forecast on the Julier.
