Getting to La Thuile from Geneva Airport

The route crosses into France and follows the A40 motorway along the Arve valley to Chamonix. From there it enters the Mont Blanc Tunnel, which runs beneath the massif into Italy and emerges near Courmayeur. After the tunnel, the road descends to Pré-Saint-Didier and then climbs a winding mountain road to La Thuile. The tunnel is a toll road with its own traffic rules, and it occasionally closes for maintenance or restricts traffic, so it is worth checking before you travel; your driver will monitor this. The Italian side is often sunnier, and the drive offers spectacular views of the south face of Mont Blanc. Allow around an hour and fifty minutes in normal conditions, longer on Saturdays and after snowfall.

The ski area: Espace San Bernardo

La Thuile shares the Espace San Bernardo with La Rosière in France, a large linked area that crosses the border near the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass. On the Italian side, the slopes are wide and varied, with long, flowing runs through larches and open terrain, well suited to intermediates. There are also some steep runs, including demanding descents from the upper slopes back to the village. Crossing to La Rosière adds sunny, south-facing terrain with views over the Tarentaise valley. Because the area is less known internationally than the big French and Swiss resorts, the slopes are often quiet. Heli-skiing is permitted in the Aosta Valley, which is unusual in the Alps; this and all off-piste skiing require a qualified guide.

The village and where to stay

La Thuile has a historic village centre with old stone houses and a relaxed atmosphere, alongside a more modern resort area near the main lifts. It has a strong mining heritage, and some of the old buildings have been restored. Accommodation ranges from hotels to apartments, many within walking distance of the main gondola. The highlight for many visitors is the food: Italian mountain cuisine, local Aosta Valley specialities such as fontina cheese and polenta, and good coffee at every turn. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoeing, winter walks and trips to Courmayeur, with its lively main street, or to the city of Aosta, known for its Roman remains.

When to go and practical tips

The season typically runs from early December to late April. The resort's altitude and north-facing slopes help it hold snow well, and the Italian side can receive heavy snowfalls from southern weather systems. January and March are often good times to go. Italian and French holiday periods bring more visitors, but the slopes generally remain less crowded than in many French resorts. Winter tyres and chains are required on mountain roads, and the road from Pré-Saint-Didier can be challenging after snowfall. Declare skis and boards when booking.

Travelling to Italy through the tunnel is straightforward with a private driver, who handles the toll, the tunnel rules and the mountain road while you relax. Many guests combine a week in La Thuile with a few days in Courmayeur or Aosta, and a transfer between them can be arranged as part of the trip.

The return journey

Allow at least three hours between leaving La Thuile and your flight on a winter Saturday, and more if tunnel traffic is heavy or snow is forecast. Your driver will check tunnel conditions before setting off. If the tunnel is closed overnight or for works, an alternative route via the Great St Bernard or through Switzerland is possible but considerably longer, which is another reason to keep a generous margin before an international flight.
