Getting to Argentière from Geneva Airport

The route crosses into France and follows the A40 motorway the whole way along the Arve valley to Chamonix, climbing over the final viaducts towards Mont Blanc. From Chamonix, the road continues up the valley through Les Praz and Les Tines to Argentière, at the foot of the Argentière glacier. The motorway section is fast and reliable, while the last stretch passes through Chamonix itself, where traffic can slow at busy times. Beyond Argentière the road continues to Vallorcine and the Swiss border, but for most visitors Argentière is the destination. Expect around an hour and a half in normal traffic, longer on Saturdays during school holidays.

The ski area: Grands Montets and Le Tour

Argentière is the gateway to the Grands Montets, a ski area famous for its steep terrain, glacier views and outstanding off-piste. It is a favourite with strong skiers and freeriders, offering long, challenging descents with dramatic views of the Argentière glacier and the surrounding peaks. The area also has intermediate runs, but its character is serious, high-mountain skiing. A short drive or bus ride up the valley brings you to Le Tour and the Balme area, which is much gentler and linked to Vallorcine, offering wide, sunny slopes suitable for intermediates and families. With a Chamonix valley pass, you can also ski Brévent–Flégère and Les Houches. Off-piste and glacier skiing in this terrain require a qualified mountain guide, as crevasses and avalanches are real hazards.

The village and where to stay

Argentière is a mountaineering village with a long alpine history, a pretty church and a relaxed but lively atmosphere, with bars and restaurants frequented by skiers and climbers. It is quieter than Chamonix but has enough shops and services for a week's stay. Accommodation includes chalets, apartments and small hotels, many within walking distance of the Grands Montets lift or on a bus route. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoeing, winter walks in the Réserve des Aiguilles Rouges area nearby, and trips to Chamonix for its shops, museums and the Aiguille du Midi cable car. The Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace is another classic excursion.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from mid-December to early May, with the Grands Montets often holding snow late thanks to its altitude and north-facing slopes. January and February bring cold, powdery conditions; March and April offer longer days and good spring snow. Saturday traffic on the A40 and through Chamonix can be heavy, so arriving early or on a Sunday helps. Winter equipment is mandatory in French mountain areas, and the upper valley can see heavy snowfall. If you are bringing touring skis, avalanche equipment or several pairs of skis, mention them when booking.

Argentière also suits travellers who want to combine skiing with time in Switzerland. The road over the Col des Montets and through Vallorcine leads towards Martigny and the Valais, so a ski week here can be followed by a transfer to Verbier, Zermatt or elsewhere in Switzerland, depending on road conditions.

The return journey

Allow about three hours between leaving Argentière and your flight on a winter Saturday, a little less midweek. The passage through Chamonix and the A40 are the usual slow points. Mountaineers and ski tourers often travel with more equipment than they expect, from rucksacks and ropes to extra boots, so list everything when booking and the right vehicle will be sent. If you have spent the last day on the mountain, a pick-up straight from the lift car park can be arranged instead of returning to the chalet first, provided your luggage is ready to collect.
