From Geneva Airport to Métabief
The route to Métabief is quite different from the road to the Alpine resorts. From the airport you take the A1 motorway along Lake Geneva towards Lausanne, then branch off northwards towards Vallorbe on the A9. Beyond Vallorbe the road crosses the border into France and continues through Jougne to Métabief, which sits in a broad valley of the Haut-Doubs. Most of the trip is on fast Swiss motorway, and the final section across the Jura is rolling rather than steep, with no long hairpin climbs. The Jura receives significant snowfall, however, and the plateau can be cold and windy, so winter equipment is still important. Expect around an hour and twenty minutes in normal traffic, slightly more around Lausanne at rush hour.
The ski area
Métabief's downhill area spreads across the slopes of the Mont d'Or and neighbouring summits. The terrain is mostly gentle to moderate, with long, wide runs through forests and open pastures, ideal for beginners, families and intermediate skiers. From the top of Mont d'Or, on clear days, the view stretches across the Swiss plateau and Lake Geneva to the Alps, including Mont Blanc, which is one of the most memorable panoramas in the Jura. The Haut-Doubs is also a celebrated cross-country skiing region, with extensive trails through snowy forests and plateaus, and Métabief is a good base for exploring them. Snowshoeing is popular too. Because the Jura is lower than the Alps, conditions depend on the winter, but when snow falls the area is beautiful and very quiet.
The village and the region
Métabief is a relaxed resort village with apartments, chalets and holiday residences, along with shops and restaurants serving Jura specialities. The Haut-Doubs is known for its cheeses, notably Comté and the seasonal Mont d'Or, a soft cheese traditionally baked in its wooden box, as well as smoked sausages from Morteau. Nearby towns such as Pontarlier offer more shops and services. The landscape of forests, farms and wide valleys feels very different from the high Alps, and the atmosphere is calm and family-oriented. The nearby Lac de Saint-Point is a pleasant spot for winter walks, and the Château de Joux, a fortress above Pontarlier, is a well-known historic site in the area.
When to go and practical tips
The season typically runs from December to March, with January and February usually offering the best snow. Because the Jura is lower, it is worth checking forecasts before travelling, and keeping in mind that cross-country trails often open with less snow than the downhill pistes. Weekends can be busy with day visitors from nearby Swiss and French towns, while weekdays are very quiet. Winter tyres are required in the French mountain areas, and the Jura plateau can see icy roads in the early morning. If you are bringing both alpine and cross-country skis, declare them when booking so there is enough space.
Métabief is also a good option for travellers based in Geneva or Lausanne who want a short snowy break without the crowds and long drives of the bigger Alpine names. A weekend there combines skiing, cheese-tasting and forest walks in a way that feels unhurried, and the motorway approach makes Friday-evening departures realistic.
The return trip
Allow around two and a half hours before your flight when leaving Métabief, a little more on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons when traffic around Lausanne can be heavy. Your driver will check road conditions on the Jura plateau before departure.
