The drive from Geneva Airport
Les Houches is one of the most straightforward Alpine destinations to reach from Geneva. After crossing into France, the route follows the A40 motorway the whole way along the Arve valley, past Cluses and Sallanches, and then up the dramatic final viaducts towards Chamonix. Les Houches has its own exit just before the valley widens towards Chamonix. Because there is no long mountain road at the end, the journey is quick and generally reliable even in snowy weather, although the A40 itself can be busy on Saturdays in the ski season. The views of the Mont Blanc massif as you climb the last section are among the most striking arrivals in the Alps.
The ski area
The ski area of Les Houches rises from the village to the Prarion and Bellevue sectors, with lifts that connect across to the Saint-Gervais side. Much of the area is wooded, which gives excellent visibility on stormy days and a particularly scenic feel when the trees are heavy with snow. Les Houches has hosted the well-known Kandahar World Cup downhill races, which shows that there is challenging terrain for good skiers alongside many friendly intermediate runs. Beginners have dedicated areas, and the atmosphere is noticeably calmer than in the higher, more extreme areas of Chamonix. From Les Houches it is also easy to reach the other ski areas of the Chamonix valley, such as Brévent–Flégère and Grands Montets, by valley bus or by car.
The village and where to stay
Les Houches is a relaxed, residential village spread along the valley floor and lower hillsides. It has shops, restaurants and a friendly atmosphere, but it is far quieter than Chamonix, which lies just a short drive further up the valley. Accommodation includes chalets, apartments and hotels, with many properties within walking distance of the lifts or on a shuttle route. Non-skiers can enjoy winter walks, snowshoeing and visits to Chamonix's town centre, museums and shops. The Tramway du Mont-Blanc, a historic rack railway, starts nearby at Saint-Gervais, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car in Chamonix offers spectacular views of the high mountains.
When to go and practical tips
The season generally runs from mid-December to late March or early April. Because the ski area is relatively low and wooded, it is at its best from January to early March; in mild spells, the higher areas of the Chamonix valley provide a reliable alternative. January is often quiet and cold, with beautiful conditions after snowfall. February brings school holidays and busy roads. Saturday traffic on the A40 can be heavy, so it is worth arriving early or on a Sunday. Winter tyres are mandatory in mountain areas in France during the season, and chains must be carried in many areas. Pack your skis and boots in proper bags and mention them when booking.
Les Houches is also a good choice for travellers combining skiing with a few days in Geneva or a business trip. The short, motorway-based transfer means you can land in the morning and be skiing in the afternoon, or catch a late flight home after a final day on the slopes. It is a practical base for anyone who wants Chamonix valley scenery without the crowds.
The return journey
On a winter Saturday, leave Les Houches about two and a half to three hours before your flight; midweek, a little less is fine. The motorway makes the journey predictable, though the approach to Geneva and the border can be busy at peak times.
