Les Houches
Les Houches is about 95 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes by road, at the western entrance to the Chamonix valley beneath Mont Blanc. Public transport options include airport coaches to the valley and rail via Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet on the Mont-Blanc Express line, while a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch drives straight to your chalet or hotel in one journey.

Les Houches in a nutshell
Les Houches is the first village you reach in the Chamonix valley, quieter and more spread out than Chamonix itself, with wooded slopes and a string of hamlets along the valley floor. Its ski area is largely tree-lined, which makes it a good choice on stormy or flat-light days when the higher Chamonix areas are less pleasant, and it suits families and intermediate skiers. It is also known for a World Cup downhill run, so there is challenge for strong skiers too. In summer Les Houches is a starting point for the Tour du Mont Blanc, and the cable car from the village gives access to the Bellevue plateau and the Mont-Blanc Tramway. Accommodation ranges from chalets in the hamlets to apartments near the lifts. Because Chamonix is just a few minutes further up the valley, many visitors stay in Les Houches for its calmer feel and use the valley bus and train to reach the bigger ski areas during the week.
Rail and coach: the realistic picture
The railway does serve Les Houches: the Mont-Blanc Express line runs from Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet up the valley through Les Houches to Chamonix and on towards the Swiss border. Getting from Geneva Airport to Saint-Gervais by train, however, usually means crossing Geneva and changing at least once on the French network before joining the mountain line. Shared coaches from the airport to the Chamonix valley are often a simpler public option, especially in winter, though they run to set times, may stop at several points and do not always serve each hamlet. For a light traveller staying close to a station or a coach stop, either can work. With skis, children or a chalet off the main road, the number of connections adds up quickly. A delayed flight is the other weak point: missing a coach slot can mean waiting a long time in the terminal for the next one, with tired children and all your bags.
Luggage and the last few hundred metres
Les Houches is long and narrow, and many chalets are on the hillside above the main road. Carrying suitcases and ski bags from a station or bus stop is hard going in snow. A private transfer loads everything at the airport and unloads at your door. A Mercedes V-Class van carries up to seven passengers and ten bags including skis, and a Mercedes Sprinter minibus takes larger groups. Declare skis and snowboards when you book so space is reserved for them. In summer the same applies to hiking gear and bike boxes for those coming to ride the trails around the valley.
Families, groups and cost per head
Coach and rail fares are charged per person, while a private car has a fixed price per vehicle. A single traveller or a couple will usually spend less on a shared coach. For a family of four or more, or friends sharing a chalet, splitting a single vehicle price brings the cost per person closer, and the trip becomes one smooth leg rather than a sequence of timetables. Child seats are available on request, and the chauffeur can stop for a break on the way.
Night arrivals, early departures and weekends
The motorway towards Mont Blanc is busy on winter Saturdays, particularly around the border and the climb into the valley. A driver who knows the road plans for it, and flight tracking means the pick-up follows your actual landing time, with waiting included if you are delayed. For early-morning flights home, being collected at the chalet door saves a very early walk to a stop in the dark. When you only have one or two bags and a convenient landing time, public transport is fine; for everything else, a car is the calmer choice.
