Getting to Avoriaz from Geneva Airport

The route crosses into France and takes the A40 motorway to Cluses, then climbs via Taninges to Les Gets and drops into Morzine. From Morzine, a winding road climbs steeply through hairpins to Avoriaz, which sits on a high plateau above sheer cliffs. The climb can be demanding in heavy snow, so winter equipment and an experienced driver matter. An alternative approach is to take the cable car from Les Prodains, at the foot of the cliffs below Avoriaz, which is useful when the road is busy or difficult. Either way, allow around an hour and a half from Geneva in normal traffic, and more on Saturdays when the Morzine valley fills with arriving visitors.

Arriving in a car-free resort

Avoriaz is closed to cars, so vehicles stop at the reception area and car parks at the edge of the resort. From there, luggage is taken to your accommodation by snow taxis, small tracked vehicles, or by horse-drawn sleighs, and many guests simply ski to their door once settled. It is worth checking in advance how your residence handles arrivals, as some offer luggage collection and others expect guests to arrange a snow taxi at reception. Your transfer driver will drop you at the reception point and help unload; travelling light and using soft ski bags makes the final stage easier. The car-free setting is one of Avoriaz's great charms, with quiet snowy streets and children able to move around safely.

The ski area: Avoriaz and the Portes du Soleil

Avoriaz is one of the highest resorts in the Portes du Soleil and sits at its centre, which makes it an ideal base for exploring the whole cross-border circuit. Lifts lead in several directions: towards Morzine and Les Gets, towards Châtel via the Lindarets valley, and over the border to Switzerland, where the steep slope known as the Swiss Wall above Champéry is a famous challenge. The local terrain is varied, with open, high-altitude runs, wooded sections around the Lindarets, and long blue and red runs that suit intermediates well. Avoriaz has a strong freestyle tradition and several snowparks. Its altitude helps it hold snow well through the season. For off-piste, always ski with a qualified guide.

The village and where to stay

Avoriaz was purpose-built, but its architecture is unusual and distinctive: wood-clad buildings with angular rooflines designed to echo the surrounding cliffs and rock formations. Accommodation is mainly in apartments and residences, most with ski-in ski-out access. The resort has a range of shops, restaurants and bars, plus an indoor aquatic centre and ice rink. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoe walks, dog sledding and sleigh rides, while families appreciate the traffic-free streets and the dedicated children's ski areas. The sense of being in a snowy village above the clouds is part of the experience.

When to go and practical tips

The season usually runs from mid-December to mid-April. Thanks to its altitude, Avoriaz often has good snow in March and early April, when lower resorts may struggle. February holidays and New Year are the busiest periods. Saturday is changeover day, and the Morzine valley and the Avoriaz road can be very slow from late morning. Arriving early, or on a Sunday, helps. Pack wisely: rigid suitcases are awkward on snow taxis and sledges, while soft bags and a backpack are easier. Declare your ski and snowboard bags at booking.

Choose a Mercedes E-Class for couples, a V-Class van for families and ski bags, or a Sprinter for groups. Child seats can be requested, and skis should be noted when booking.
