Geneva to Monaco through the Alps via Grenoble and the Route Napoléon

Travel from Geneva to Monaco the mountain way: Annecy, Grenoble, the Route Napoléon through Provence, then the Riviera coast to Monte-Carlo.

Instead of flying to Nice, you can travel from Geneva Airport to Monaco by road through the French Alps: past Annecy (44 km, about 40 minutes), through Grenoble and down the historic Route Napoléon to the Riviera. Over two days, the journey moves from lakes and peaks to lavender country and the Mediterranean, and AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you all the way to your hotel in Monte-Carlo.

  • Route: Geneva, Annecy, Chambéry, Grenoble, Route Napoléon via Gap, Sisteron and Castellane, Grasse, Cannes, Nice, Monaco
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France and ends in Monaco
  • Time to allow: two days, with a night in Provence
  • Faster alternative: motorway via Lyon and the Rhône valley
  • Best season: spring to autumn

From Geneva to Grenoble

The journey starts with a short run into France to Annecy, where a coffee by the lake or a walk through the canals of the old town makes an easy first stop. From there the motorway continues south past Lake Bourget, France's largest natural lake, and the old Savoyard capital of Chambéry, before following the wide Isère valley to Grenoble.

Grenoble, at the meeting point of three mountain ranges, is known as the capital of the French Alps. The cable car with its spherical cabins, often called the bubbles, rises from the riverbank to the Bastille fortress, with views over the city to the Belledonne and Vercors ranges and, on clear days, Mont Blanc. The Musée de Grenoble holds a strong collection of fine art.

The Route Napoléon: Alps to Provence

South of Grenoble begins the Route Napoléon, the road that follows the path Napoleon took in 1815 on his return from exile on Elba. Today it is a well-surfaced, scenic main road climbing over the Laffrey plateau and through the Dauphiné Alps to Gap, then on to Sisteron, where a massive citadel guards a narrow gorge on the Durance and marks the gateway to Provence.

This section of the journey is the most dramatic change of scenery: green Alpine meadows give way to dry hills, lavender fields and olive trees. Digne-les-Bains, a spa town in a ring of mountains, and Castellane, beneath a chapel perched on a rock, are good places to stay overnight. From Castellane, the Verdon Gorge, one of Europe's most spectacular canyons, is a short and highly recommended detour.

Grasse, Cannes and the coast

The road descends from the high plateaux to Grasse, the historic capital of perfume, where fields of jasmine and roses once supplied the industry and several perfume houses offer museum visits. From here the Mediterranean is suddenly close. Cannes, with its Croisette promenade and famous film festival, is only a short drive below.

The final stretch follows the coast east past Antibes and Nice. Your chauffeur can take the faster motorway or the corniche roads, which cling to the cliffs above the sea between Nice and Monaco, with views over Villefranche-sur-Mer and Cap Ferrat. The Moyenne Corniche, in particular, offers a sweeping panorama before descending into the principality.

Arriving in Monaco

Monaco is a tiny sovereign state built on steep slopes around its harbour. The old town of Monaco-Ville sits on the Rock, where the Prince's Palace, the cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum, built into the cliff face, overlook the sea. Across the harbour, Monte-Carlo is home to the Belle Époque Casino, the Opera and luxury boutiques around the Casino Square.

The streets of Monaco become the circuit for the famous Formula 1 Grand Prix once a year, when traffic and hotels are under great pressure. At other times, the principality is easy to explore on foot, using public lifts and escalators that link the different levels of the city.

Planning advice

  • If time is short, the motorway via Lyon and the Rhône valley is quicker but less scenic.
  • Book Monaco hotels early around major events.
  • Allow time for the Verdon detour; the roads around the gorge are narrow and slow.
  • Your chauffeur can drop you directly at your Monaco hotel entrance.
