Geneva to Paris via Burgundy: vineyards, Dijon and abbeys

Turn the drive from Geneva to Paris into a two- or three-day journey through Beaune, Dijon, Chablis and the hilltop basilica of Vézelay.

The fast way from Geneva to Paris is a long day on French motorways, but a route through Burgundy turns it into a two-or-three-day journey with stops in Beaune, Dijon, Vézelay and Chablis. Your chauffeur from AirportsTransfers.ch handles the driving and the luggage while you enjoy the wine villages and abbeys on the way.

  • Route: Geneva, Bourg-en-Bresse, Beaune, Dijon, Semur-en-Auxois, Vézelay, Chablis, Fontainebleau, Paris
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France
  • Time to allow: two to three days
  • Highlights: Hospices de Beaune, the Route des Grands Crus, Vézelay basilica, Chablis cellars
  • Good for: travellers relocating with luggage, food lovers, business trips with time to spare

Why drive rather than take the train

High-speed trains link Geneva and Paris efficiently, so the reason to go by road is the journey itself. Burgundy lies almost exactly on the way, and its abbeys, wine villages and gastronomy are hard to reach by train without changes and taxis. For families moving with large amounts of luggage, or groups who would otherwise need several taxis at each end, a single vehicle from door to door is also simply easier.

There is also the pleasure of pace. On the train, the countryside flashes past in a few hours; by car you can stop for a coffee in a market square, buy cheese from a farm shop and take a short walk among the vines. For anyone moving to Paris for work, it is a gentle way to make the transition between two cities.

Day 1: Geneva to Beaune

From the airport, the motorway crosses into France and heads west through the Ain to Bourg-en-Bresse, then north along the Saône towards Chalon and Beaune. Arrive by early afternoon and you have time to visit the Hôtel-Dieu, the 15th-century hospital whose courtyard roof of patterned, glazed tiles is the emblem of Burgundy, and to walk the old ramparts.

Beaune's cellars, some running deep beneath the town, open for tastings of wines from the surrounding Côte de Beaune. An evening meal of escargots, oeufs en meurette or coq au vin sets the tone for the trip.

Day 2: the Côte de Nuits and Dijon

Instead of joining the motorway straight away, take the Route des Grands Crus north. This road threads through Aloxe-Corton, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Gevrey-Chambertin, villages whose names are known to wine lovers worldwide, with the Château du Clos de Vougeot standing among its walled vines.

Dijon, at the end of the route, was the capital of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy. The Palace of the Dukes houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts, with the ornate tombs of the dukes, and the old town of half-timbered houses and glazed-tile roofs is ideal for a stroll. Look for the little owl carved on the side of the Church of Notre-Dame: touching it with the left hand is said to bring luck. Dijon mustard, gingerbread and crème de cassis make good souvenirs.

Day 3: Vézelay, Chablis and on to Paris

Heading north-west, the road crosses the rolling Auxois countryside. Semur-en-Auxois, a fortified town above a bend in the river, is a striking stop. Further on, the hill of Vézelay rises above the Morvan foothills, crowned by the Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site that was a starting point for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela.

Chablis, a short distance north, is the home of crisp, mineral white wines made from Chardonnay, and a tasting there is a fitting final stop in Burgundy. The motorway then runs to Paris; if time allows, a detour via the forest and château of Fontainebleau, a royal residence used by French kings for centuries, makes an elegant last chapter before the city.

Practical points

  • Tell your hotel in Paris your expected arrival time; city traffic can be slow on Friday evenings.
  • Many Burgundy estates receive visitors by appointment only.
  • Wine purchases need space: a Mercedes V-Class carries up to ten bags.
  • The trip works equally well in reverse, ending at Geneva Airport for a flight home.

Spring and autumn suit this route best: the vineyards are green or turning gold, temperatures are pleasant for walking and the roads into Paris are calmer than during the summer holiday exodus. In winter the trip remains easy, though some smaller wine estates close for a few weeks.
