Ticino, Switzerland's Italian-speaking canton south of the Alps, combines palm-lined lakes, stone villages and UNESCO-listed castles, and four or five days are enough to see Bellinzona, Locarno and Lugano. It is a long but beautiful drive from Geneva Airport, either over the Simplon into Italy or via the Gotthard, and AirportsTransfers.ch can take you all the way door to door.
- Main stops: Locarno and Ascona, the Verzasca valley, Bellinzona, Lugano
- Getting there: via the Simplon and the Centovalli, or via central Switzerland and the Gotthard
- Time to allow: four to five days
- Language: Italian, with German and English widely understood
- Best season: spring to autumn, when the lakes are at their mildest
Two ways to reach Ticino from Geneva
There is no single fast motorway from Geneva to Ticino, which is why a planned private transfer is so useful. The southern route follows Lake Geneva and the Rhône valley through Valais, crosses the Simplon Pass into Italy and then, from Domodossola, turns east along the Valle Vigezzo and the Centovalli to Locarno. It is a scenic, winding road through chestnut forests and gorges, at its best in summer and autumn.
The northern route takes the motorway towards Bern and Lucerne, then through the Gotthard road tunnel and down the Leventina valley to Bellinzona. It is more straightforward in winter and when time matters. In summer, the Nufenen Pass from upper Valais to Airolo is a third, high-mountain option. Your chauffeur will suggest the best choice on the day.
Locarno, Ascona and the Verzasca valley
Locarno sits at the northern end of Lake Maggiore and enjoys one of the mildest climates in Switzerland, with camellias and palm trees along the promenade. Its Piazza Grande, an arcaded square at the heart of the old town, hosts the open-air screenings of the town's renowned international film festival each summer. Above the town, the sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso clings to the rock with sweeping lake views.
Neighbouring Ascona has a pretty lakefront of pastel houses and cafés. Just inland, the Verzasca valley is famous for its startlingly clear green water and the double-arched stone bridge, the Ponte dei Salti, at Lavertezzo. Further up, villages of stone-roofed houses cling to the hillsides. A half-day there with a chauffeur saves the challenge of parking on the narrow valley road in high season.
Bellinzona: three castles
Bellinzona, the cantonal capital, guards the routes from the Gotthard and the San Bernardino into Italy, which explains its three castles: Castelgrande on its rocky outcrop in the town, Montebello on the hillside above and Sasso Corbaro higher still. Together with the walls that linked them, they form a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old town below is a pleasant tangle of squares, churches and Lombard-style houses with wrought-iron balconies. Because Bellinzona sees fewer visitors than the lake towns, it often feels refreshingly unhurried, and walking the ramparts of Castelgrande gives a clear sense of how the town once controlled the Alpine trade routes.
Bellinzona is a short drive from both Locarno and Lugano, so it can be visited as a half-day stop between the two lakes.
Lugano and its lake
Lugano is Ticino's largest town, set on a bay of Lake Lugano between two mountains, Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore, both reachable by funicular for views over the lake and the Alps. The town combines a banking and business centre with an Italianate old town of arcades and piazzas, and its lakeside LAC cultural centre stages concerts and exhibitions.
Boats link Lugano with lakeside villages such as Gandria, built steeply on the rocks, and Morcote, with its arcaded waterfront and church above. Milan is close enough for a day trip if you want to add some Italian city life to the journey.
Practical tips
- In summer, the Centovalli route is a highlight; in winter, choose the Gotthard.
- Ticino uses Swiss francs, but euros are often accepted near the border.
- Grotti, rustic outdoor taverns under the chestnut trees, serve simple local food: look for polenta, risotto and local Merlot.
- Plan the Verzasca on a weekday to avoid the busiest periods.
