The Aosta Valley castles tour from Geneva via the Great St Bernard

Cross the Great St Bernard from Valais into Italy, explore Roman Aosta and a valley lined with medieval castles, then return through the Mont Blanc tunnel.

The Aosta Valley is Italy's smallest region and one of its most castle-studded, and from Geneva Airport it makes a perfect two-to-three-day loop: out over the Great St Bernard, back through the Mont Blanc tunnel via Courmayeur, 107 km and about 1 h 30 from GVA. A private chauffeur from AirportsTransfers.ch handles the passes and tunnels while you focus on Roman ruins, frescoed courtyards and mountain views.

  • Outward route: Lake Geneva, Martigny, Great St Bernard Pass or tunnel, Aosta
  • Return route: Courmayeur, Mont Blanc tunnel, Chamonix, Geneva
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into Italy
  • Castles to see: Fénis, Issogne, Verrès, the Fort of Bard, Sarriod de la Tour
  • Best season: June to September for the pass road; the tunnel is open year-round

Over the Great St Bernard

From the airport, the road follows Lake Geneva and the Rhône valley to Martigny, then climbs the Entremont valley towards the Great St Bernard. In summer, the old pass road continues to the top, where a hospice founded in the Middle Ages by canons still welcomes travellers beside a small lake, and where the famous St Bernard rescue dogs are associated with the site. It is one of the oldest crossings of the Alps, used by Roman legions and by Napoleon's army.

When the pass is closed by snow, usually from autumn to late spring, the Great St Bernard road tunnel offers a year-round link. Either way, the descent on the Italian side leads through pastures and hamlets straight down to Aosta.

Aosta: a Roman city in the Alps

Aosta was founded by the Romans as Augusta Praetoria, and its grid of streets still follows the original plan. The Arch of Augustus, the double Porta Praetoria gate, long sections of town wall and the tall façade of the Roman theatre are all within walking distance of each other. The collegiate church of Sant'Orso, with its Romanesque cloister of carved capitals, is another highlight.

Aosta is also a pleasant overnight base, with arcaded streets, wine bars serving local Petit Rouge and Fumin reds, and restaurants offering valley dishes: fontina cheese, polenta, carbonade and the fragrant cured lard of Arnad. Both French and Italian are official languages here, a reminder of the valley's long ties with Savoy.

The castles of the lower valley

East of Aosta, the main road and motorway follow the Dora Baltea river past a remarkable sequence of castles, many open to visitors. Fénis is the archetypal fairy-tale castle, with towers, double walls and a courtyard decorated with Gothic frescoes. Issogne, a Renaissance residence, is known for its painted portico and the wrought-iron pomegranate fountain in its courtyard. Just across the river, Verrès is a stark, cube-shaped fortress on a rocky spur.

Further down, the Fort of Bard is a massive 19th-century fortress blocking the valley, now a cultural centre with a museum of the Alps reached by panoramic lifts. Combining two or three castles with lunch in a village makes an ideal day, and with a chauffeur by the hour you can move between them without hunting for parking on narrow hillside lanes.

The upper valley and Courmayeur

West of Aosta, the valley narrows towards Mont Blanc. Smaller castles such as Sarriod de la Tour, Saint-Pierre on its rocky outcrop and Aymavilles with its corner towers punctuate the landscape. The vineyards of Morgex and La Salle, among the highest in Europe, produce a crisp white wine from vines trained low against the cold.

Courmayeur, at the foot of the Italian side of Mont Blanc, is an elegant mountain town with a pedestrian main street. The Skyway Monte Bianco cable car rises from nearby Entrèves to high viewing platforms facing the glaciers, a spectacular way to finish the tour before the drive back through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Chamonix and on to Geneva.

Planning notes

  • Check whether the Great St Bernard pass is open before setting off; otherwise the tunnel is used.
  • Castle visits are often by guided tour; plan your day around the first slots.
  • Bring a warm layer even in summer for the pass and the Skyway.
  • The loop can be done in reverse if you prefer to finish over the pass.

For a shorter version, a single long day can take in Aosta and one castle, but staying a night lets you enjoy the valley at a gentler pace.
