A ski and shopping week from Geneva works best as a mountain stay in Courmayeur, about 107 km and 1 h 30 from Geneva Airport through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, followed by a few days in Milan, which is about 329 km and 3 h 50 from GVA. Courmayeur lies on the way, so the second leg down the Aosta Valley motorway is shorter than the full distance. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you from GVA to the slopes, on to Milan and, if needed, back to Geneva.
- Ski stay: Courmayeur, about 107 km / 1 h 30 from GVA
- City stay: Milan, about 329 km / 3 h 50 from GVA
- Route: Mont Blanc Tunnel, Aosta Valley, then the motorway across the Po plain
- Border crossing: into France, then through the tunnel into Italy
- Best for: couples and friends who want snow, style and culture in one trip
Why ski first, then shop
Skiing at the start of the week, when you are rested, and finishing in the city is the natural order. Courmayeur is an Italian resort at the foot of Mont Blanc, with a pedestrian main street, a relaxed lunch culture on the slopes and spectacular views from the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car, which climbs towards Punta Helbronner. Four or five days there is ideal. Then you move on to Milan, where the pace changes completely: fashion boutiques, Gothic architecture, art collections and opera.
This order also simplifies the luggage. Once skiing is over, you can send ski bags home separately or leave them with your chauffeur for the return trip, rather than carrying them through city hotels.
From Geneva Airport to Courmayeur
The route from GVA follows the Arve valley into France towards Chamonix, then takes the Mont Blanc Tunnel under the massif. You emerge in Italy just above Courmayeur, about 1 h 30 after leaving the airport in normal traffic. Queues at the tunnel are possible on busy Saturdays. A private transfer means no changes with skis, and you arrive directly at your hotel or chalet, ready to collect passes the same afternoon.
Courmayeur to Milan
On transfer day, the road runs down the Aosta Valley past Aosta and its castles, out onto the Po plain and east to Milan. Since Courmayeur is well along the route from Geneva, the drive is noticeably shorter than the full GVA to Milan distance; a comfortable half day is enough. Points worth planning:
- Leave after a final morning ski or a late breakfast, aiming to reach Milan by late afternoon.
- A lunch stop in the Aosta Valley, at Aosta or near one of its castles, breaks the journey nicely.
- City-centre traffic in Milan can be slow; your driver will take you to your hotel door.
- If you plan to return to Geneva by car, book the return leg now too.
Shopping, art and opera in Milan
Milan's fashion heart is the Quadrilatero della Moda, the streets around Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga, lined with designer flagships. A few minutes' walk away, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a glass-roofed nineteenth-century arcade, links the Piazza del Duomo with the Piazza della Scala. The Duomo itself, with its marble spires, is a must, and visitors can go up to the roof terraces for views over the city.
For culture, Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie requires advance booking, and the Pinacoteca di Brera houses a major collection of Italian painting in the Brera district, which is also lovely for an evening stroll. An evening at Teatro alla Scala, one of the world's most famous opera houses, is the highlight for many visitors; tickets for popular productions sell out, so plan ahead. Dress codes are smart for evening performances.
Getting home
You have two options. Many travellers fly home directly from one of Milan's airports, in which case you only need the city transfer to the terminal. Others prefer to return to Geneva by road, about 3 h 50 from Milan, which makes sense if your onward flight is from GVA or if you want to collect ski bags left in Geneva. A daytime departure keeps the journey relaxed, and your chauffeur can plan a stop on the way.
