Four Swiss lakes in four days: Geneva, Neuchâtel, Thun and Lucerne

A relaxed four-day loop from Geneva Airport linking Lake Geneva, Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Thun and Lake Lucerne, with one lake for each day.

Switzerland's lakes are at the heart of its landscape, and four of the most beautiful, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Thun and Lucerne, can be linked in a relaxed four-day loop starting at Geneva Airport. Each day involves only a short drive, leaving plenty of time for boat trips, castles and lakeside lunches, and AirportsTransfers.ch can drive every leg.

  • Day 1: Lake Geneva: Geneva, the Lavaux terraces, Montreux and Chillon
  • Day 2: Lake Neuchâtel: Neuchâtel old town, Murten nearby
  • Day 3: Lake Thun: Thun, Oberhofen and Spiez, with Bern on the way
  • Day 4: Lake Lucerne: the old town, a lake cruise and a mountain viewpoint
  • Best season: May to October, when lake steamers run their full schedules

Day 1: Lake Geneva

Start with the lake you land beside. In Geneva, the Jet d'Eau fountain, the flower clock and the old town around St Pierre Cathedral are easy to fit into a morning. The chauffeur then follows the northern shore past Lausanne, 61 km and about 45 minutes from the airport, to the Lavaux vineyard terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage site where vines cascade down to the water in stone-walled steps.

Montreux, 91 km and about 1 h 05 from GVA, has a palm-lined promenade and the statue of Freddie Mercury looking over the lake. Just beyond, the Château de Chillon, a medieval castle built on a rock in the water, is one of Switzerland's most visited monuments. Spend the night in Montreux or back in Lausanne.

Day 2: Lake Neuchâtel

The second day heads north across the Vaud countryside to Lake Neuchâtel, the largest lake entirely within Switzerland. Neuchâtel's old town is built of a distinctive yellow sandstone, which gave rise to the description of the town as looking carved from butter. The castle and the collegiate church crown the hill above the lake, with views to the Alps on clear days.

The region is also the cradle of Swiss watchmaking, with La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle in the Jura hills recognised by UNESCO for their watchmaking town planning. Nearby, on the smaller Lake Murten, the town of Murten has intact medieval walls you can walk along, and is a charming place for the evening.

Day 3: Bern and Lake Thun

On the way to the Oberland, stop in Bern, the federal capital, 160 km and about 1 h 50 from Geneva Airport. Its old town on a loop of the Aare river, with kilometres of arcades, fountains and the Zytglogge clock tower, is a UNESCO site, and the bear park sits beside the river.

From Bern, it is a short drive to Thun, where the Aare flows out of Lake Thun. Here the scenery becomes Alpine: the Niesen pyramid and the snowy peaks of the Bernese Alps rise beyond the water. Rather than driving along the shore, take a lake boat from Thun to Spiez or Oberhofen, whose castle with its turreted tower stands at the water's edge, and let your chauffeur meet you at the pier. Stay overnight on the lake.

If the weather is clear, the funicular and cable car up the Niesen, or the boat to the caves of St Beatus on the northern shore, add a little adventure to an otherwise gentle day.

Day 4: Lake Lucerne

The final day crosses the Brünig Pass from the Oberland into central Switzerland and descends to Lake Lucerne, a lake of many arms surrounded by mountains. Lucerne's old town, with the Chapel Bridge, the Museggmauer ramparts and painted houses, is easily explored on foot. A cruise on one of the paddle steamers, or a trip up the Rigi or Pilatus by cogwheel railway and cable car, gives the finest views of the lake.

From Lucerne, you can return to Geneva Airport via the motorway past Bern or continue to Zurich and its airport, a short drive away, if you are flying out from there.

Driving the four lakes in this order means the scenery grows steadily more Alpine, from the vineyards of Lavaux to the peaks around Lucerne, a satisfying crescendo for a first visit to Switzerland.

Tips for the loop

  • Lake steamers are part of the experience: use the chauffeur to collect you at the next pier.
  • Book Chillon and mountain excursions ahead in July and August.
  • Pack a light jacket: lake breezes and mountain viewpoints can be cool.
  • The loop also works in reverse, starting in Zurich and ending at Geneva Airport.

Booking the four-lake loop

Each leg can be reserved in advance through AirportsTransfers.ch, either as separate transfers or with a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) for the busier days. The fixed price for the vehicle appears before checkout, and payment is made securely by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. At Geneva Airport, a chauffeur waits with a name sign and adjusts to your flight's actual arrival time. Child seats are provided on request. For questions about the route, contact +41 78 346 56 77 by phone or WhatsApp, available every day around the clock.
