Geneva sits so close to the borders that you can visit France, Italy and Switzerland in a single day by circling the Mont Blanc massif: Chamonix is 90 km (about 1 h 15) from Geneva Airport, Courmayeur 107 km (about 1 h 30) through the Mont Blanc tunnel, and the return runs via the Great St Bernard and Swiss Valais. It is a long but memorable day, and a chauffeur from AirportsTransfers.ch makes it possible without the stress of driving.
- Loop: Geneva, Chamonix, Mont Blanc tunnel, Courmayeur, Aosta, Great St Bernard, Martigny, Lake Geneva
- Countries: France, Italy and Switzerland
- Duration: a full day of around ten to twelve hours with stops
- Best booked as: chauffeur by the hour, so the driver stays with you all day
- Best season: June to September, when the views are clearest and the Great St Bernard pass is open
Why this loop works
Mont Blanc stands exactly where the three countries meet, and the roads around it form a natural circuit: the Arve valley on the French side, the Aosta valley on the Italian side and the Rhône valley in Switzerland, joined by the Mont Blanc tunnel and the Great St Bernard. Each valley has its own language, food and architecture, so the day feels like three short holidays. Doing it by public transport would mean several changes and tight connections; with a chauffeur, the vehicle is waiting at every stop and the plan can bend around the weather.
Morning: Chamonix, France
Leave Geneva early, ideally around breakfast time. The road follows the Arve valley into France and climbs to Chamonix in about an hour and a quarter. Morning is the best time for mountain views, so this is the moment for the main excursion of the day: the Aiguille du Midi cable car to its high summit station facing Mont Blanc, or the rack railway to Montenvers and the Mer de Glace glacier. Allow two to three hours including the ascent and some time in the town centre.
A summer alternative for adventurous travellers is to continue from the Aiguille du Midi across the glaciers by the panoramic gondola to Pointe Helbronner, then down to the Italian side on the Skyway, while your chauffeur drives through the tunnel and meets you at the bottom. Check that the lifts are running on your date and that the timing works before planning around it.
Midday: through the tunnel to Italy
The Mont Blanc tunnel, more than 11 km long, passes beneath the massif and emerges at Entrèves, just above Courmayeur. In minutes you are in a different country and culture: Italian is spoken, espresso replaces café crème and the menus feature polenta, fontina and local wines.
Courmayeur's pedestrian main street is lined with cafés and shops, and lunch here is a highlight of the day. If time allows, continue down the Aosta valley to Aosta itself, where the Roman arch, gate and theatre are all within a few minutes' walk of each other, or stop at one of the castles visible from the road, such as Sarre or Saint-Pierre.
Afternoon: over the Great St Bernard into Switzerland
From Aosta, the road climbs north towards the Great St Bernard. In summer, the pass road crosses at high altitude beside the ancient hospice, a stop that combines history, a lake and the famous St Bernard dogs associated with the site. Outside the summer season, the road tunnel provides a year-round crossing into Switzerland. The descent through the Entremont valley leads to Martigny in the Rhône valley.
The final leg follows the Rhône to Lake Geneva and along its northern shore back to Geneva. On the way, a short stop in Montreux, 91 km and about 1 h 05 from the airport, or a view of the Lavaux vineyard terraces in the evening light, rounds off the day.
Making the day work
- Start early: daylight and clear mountain views are the main constraints.
- Carry passports or ID cards for all passengers, as the route crosses several borders.
- Dress in layers: high-altitude viewpoints are cold even in midsummer.
- Be flexible: if clouds cover Mont Blanc, your chauffeur can reverse the loop.
In winter the loop is still possible using the Great St Bernard tunnel, but daylight is short, so the lift excursion in Chamonix should be kept simple.
