When a flight is cancelled or diverted, contact your transfer company as soon as you know your new plan, giving the new flight number, date and arrival airport. Flight tracking handles ordinary delays automatically, but a cancellation or diversion needs a human decision. AirportsTransfers.ch can be reached 24/7 by phone and WhatsApp, which matters when plans change late at night or in the middle of a storm.
- Cancellation: tell the transfer company your new flight and date
- Diversion to another airport: ask whether a pick-up there is possible
- Outbound flight cancelled: rearrange or cancel your departure pick-up
- What to have ready: booking reference, new flight details, passenger count
- Check the terms: amendment and cancellation conditions vary by company
Why cancellations need your input
Flight tracking shows the driver when an aircraft is late or early. When a flight is cancelled outright, the data simply stops, and there is no way for the transfer company to know whether you have been rebooked for later the same day, moved to the next morning or sent via another city. Only you, or the airline on your behalf, can provide that information. The sooner you pass it on, the easier it is to adjust your booking and avoid a driver waiting for a flight that will never arrive.
Rebooked on a later flight
If the airline moves you to a later flight to Geneva, send the transfer company the new flight number, the new arrival time and confirmation that the number of passengers and bags is unchanged. If the new flight is on another day, the booking may need to be amended rather than simply moved by a few hours. Keep your original booking reference handy, as it allows the team to find your reservation quickly.
When you are rebooked overnight, also warn your hotel or chalet. Late arrivals in mountain resorts need key arrangements, and some properties will hold a room only if they know you are still coming.
Diverted to another airport
Bad weather, fog or technical issues occasionally lead flights bound for Geneva to land elsewhere. Common alternatives in the region include Lyon (about 1 h 45 from Geneva Airport by road), Zurich (about 2 h 55), Milan (about 3 h 50) and Basel. Airlines usually arrange onward transport for diverted passengers, often by coach back to Geneva, but some travellers prefer to continue directly to their destination.
If you are diverted, contact the transfer company and explain where you are and where you need to go. Depending on availability and distance, it may be possible to arrange a pick-up at the diversion airport and drive you straight to your resort or hotel, which can be much quicker than returning to Geneva first. This would be a new or amended booking with its own fixed price. Alternatively, if the airline is bringing passengers back to Geneva, your original pick-up can be rescheduled to the coach's expected arrival.
Before deciding, weigh up the options calmly. A coach back to Geneva may take several hours after a diversion, but it is often arranged by the airline at no extra cost. A direct private transfer from the diversion airport is faster and more comfortable, particularly for families with young children or groups with skis, but it is an additional journey. Speak to the airline staff about what they are offering before you commit, and keep any written information they give you for your insurer.
When your departure flight is cancelled
On the way home, a cancellation may leave you with an extra night in the resort or city. Let the transfer company know your new departure flight so the pick-up time can be moved. If the airline has rerouted you through another airport, for example Zurich or Lyon, ask whether a transfer to that airport is possible instead. If you no longer need the transfer at all, inform the company promptly and check the cancellation terms in your booking.
Reading the terms
Each transfer company sets its own rules for amendments and cancellations, including notice periods and any charges. Read them when you book, rather than in the middle of a disruption, and keep your confirmation email easy to find. Travel insurance may cover additional transport costs caused by cancellations or diversions; check your policy and keep receipts.
