Domodossola
Domodossola is 276 km from Geneva Airport, about 3 hours 15 minutes by road up the Rhône valley to Brig and over the Simplon Pass, where the route crosses the border into Italy. The main town of the Ossola valley in northern Piedmont, it has a fine arcaded market square, a pilgrimage hill listed by UNESCO and easy access to Lake Maggiore and the alpine valleys around it. AirportsTransfers.ch offers private transfers from Geneva arrivals to Domodossola and the surrounding area.

The route over the Simplon
The first part of the journey follows the motorway along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône valley through Martigny, Sion and Visp to Brig. From Brig, the Simplon road climbs in wide curves above the valley to the pass, where a large stone eagle monument and an old hospice stand among high pastures and glaciers. On the southern side the road drops through the dramatic gorge of Gondo, reaches the Italian border and continues down the Divedro valley to Domodossola.
The pass is a major international route and is normally kept open throughout the year, but snow and wind can make conditions demanding in winter, and occasional closures happen. In those cases, alternatives exist, including the car-carrying train through the Lötschberg or longer routes. An experienced chauffeur will check conditions before departure and choose the most sensible option.
The old town and market square
Domodossola's historic centre is compact and full of character. The Piazza del Mercato, the medieval market square, is surrounded by arcades with stone columns, wooden balconies and loggias, and has been the meeting point of the valley for centuries. Narrow lanes lead from it to smaller squares, churches and palaces such as Palazzo San Francesco, which houses part of the town's museum collections.
The town's weekly market is a long-standing tradition, drawing shoppers from the surrounding valleys and from across the Swiss border who come for food, clothing and household goods. It gives the town a busy, cheerful atmosphere and offers a glimpse of everyday life in the Ossola.
Sacro Monte Calvario
On the hill of Mattarella above the town, the Sacro Monte Calvario is a pilgrimage route of chapels representing the stations of the Cross, built from the seventeenth century onwards. It is one of the nine Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A walk up through the chapels, with views over the valley and the surrounding mountains, is a peaceful half-day outing, and the ruins of an old castle crown the hill.
Valleys, railways and lakes
Domodossola sits at the meeting point of several alpine valleys, each with its own character. The Vigezzo valley, often called the valley of painters for the artists it produced, is crossed by the narrow-gauge Vigezzina-Centovalli railway, which winds over bridges and through forests to Locarno in Switzerland. It makes a superb round trip combined with the Simplon line.
- Antigorio and Formazza valleys: stone villages, Walser culture and the high Toce waterfall
- Lake Maggiore: Stresa and the Borromean Islands with their palaces and gardens
- Lake Orta: the island of San Giulio and the village of Orta San Giulio
- Devero: an alpine plateau for walking in summer and snowshoeing in winter
If you want to explore several of these in one day, a chauffeur by the hour, with a minimum of two hours, avoids juggling local buses and trains.
Food and practical tips
Ossola cooking is mountain fare with Italian flair: local cheeses such as Bettelmatt from the high pastures, cured hams from the Vigezzo valley, rye bread, chestnuts and polenta, washed down with wines from the lower valley. Hotels in Domodossola are mainly in the centre or near the station; many visitors also stay by Lake Maggiore and visit the town for the day. Italy uses the euro, so make sure you have a suitable card. Remember that all passengers need valid travel documents for the border.
