Getting from Geneva Airport to Baden
From the airport, the motorway runs along Lake Geneva to Lausanne and then across the Swiss plateau, via Yverdon and the Jura foot lakes or via Bern, to the main east-west axis. Past Olten and Aarau the route continues east to Baden, which sits in a narrow gorge where the Limmat cuts through the last folds of the Jura. Journey times are reliable outside commuter hours, although the section towards Zurich is among the busiest in the country.
Baden is well connected by rail, but from Geneva the trip involves at least one change and often more if you are coming from the airport with luggage. A direct transfer is simpler, particularly for spa guests who want to arrive relaxed or for teams heading to a meeting.
The thermal springs
Baden's springs are among the most mineral-rich in Switzerland, and the water emerges hot from the ground near the bend of the river. The Romans called the town Aquae Helveticae and built baths here. In the Middle Ages and later, Baden became a famous spa resort, visited by nobles, diplomats and writers, and the grand hotels of the bath quarter reflected its prosperity.
After a long decline, the spa quarter has been renewed. A modern thermal bath designed by the Ticino architect Mario Botta now stands by the river, with indoor and outdoor pools fed by the springs and views over the Limmat. Small public fountains of thermal water and restored old bath buildings recall the town's long history of bathing.
The old town
The historic centre climbs from the river to the ruins of the Stein castle, which crowns a rocky ridge above the town and offers views over the rooftops. The old town has narrow lanes, a town tower with a decorated façade, and the Tagsatzung hall, where delegates of the old Swiss Confederation met for centuries. A covered wooden bridge crosses the Limmat to the Landvogteischloss, the former bailiff's castle, now a museum of local history.
Baden also has a lively cultural scene for its size, with theatres, a cinema tradition and summer events on its squares. The art museum in a former villa, surrounded by a park, shows a notable collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works.
Business and engineering heritage
Baden is closely linked to the history of Swiss electrical engineering: the company Brown Boveri was founded here in the late nineteenth century and shaped the town's growth. Today the area is still home to engineering and energy companies, and the proximity of Zurich and its airport makes Baden a practical place for meetings and conferences. Invoices for companies are available, and a chauffeur by the hour, with a minimum of two hours, can link sites around the region.
Day trips and practical tips
- Zurich: the old town, lake and museums, a short drive away
- Lenzburg and Habsburg castles: two of Aargau's historic strongholds
- Kloster Wettingen: a former Cistercian abbey on a loop of the Limmat
- Rhine Falls: the broad, powerful falls of the Rhine near Schaffhausen
Baden is easily walkable, with the spa quarter, old town and station close together. Hotels range from historic properties in the bath quarter to business hotels near the station. Bring swimwear even in winter: the outdoor thermal pools are especially pleasant on a cold, clear day.
