Clermont-Ferrand

Clermont-Ferrand is about 324 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 3 h 20 min by road, crossing into France straight away and heading west past Lyon into the Auvergne. The capital of the Auvergne is a university and industrial city built partly from dark volcanic stone, with the domes of the Chaîne des Puys rising just outside it. AirportsTransfers.ch drives the whole route, a useful option given that rail links from Geneva involve changes.

  • Distance from GVA: about 324 km by road
  • Drive time: around 3 h 20 min
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into France shortly after the airport
  • Known for: the black-stone cathedral, the Puy de Dôme, tyre-making heritage
  • Good for: business visits, volcano walks, Auvergne food

Getting there from Geneva Airport

From the airport, the route enters France within minutes and follows the motorway south-west towards Lyon, through the Bugey hills and the Ain. Rather than crossing central Lyon, it skirts the city and continues west on the A89, which climbs through the Monts du Forez and the Livradois towards the Auvergne plateau and Clermont-Ferrand. It is a scenic motorway with few towns along the way.

Lyon's ring roads are the main point of congestion, especially at weekday rush hours and on holiday weekends. In winter, the higher sections of the A89 can see snow and fog, so a chauffeur familiar with the route is reassuring on an evening arrival.

A city of dark stone

Clermont-Ferrand's old centre stands on a low volcanic mound, crowned by the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption. Built in Gothic style from black Volvic lava stone, it has a striking, sombre look unlike any other French cathedral, and its twin spires are visible from far around. Nearby, the Romanesque basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Port, in pale stone, is a fine example of Auvergne Romanesque architecture and is listed by UNESCO as part of the routes to Santiago de Compostela.

The Place de Jaude, a large square at the foot of the old town, is the commercial heart, with a statue of the Gaulish chief Vercingetorix, who defeated Julius Caesar at nearby Gergovia. The city is also home to the Michelin tyre company, whose history and products are presented in a dedicated museum, and to a well-known international short film festival.

The Chaîne des Puys and the Puy de Dôme

Just west of the city lies the Chaîne des Puys, a line of around eighty volcanoes, cones and craters, together with the Limagne fault, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The highest and most famous is the Puy de Dôme, which can be climbed on foot or reached by a rack railway, the Panoramique des Dômes. From the summit, with its Roman temple ruins, the view takes in the volcanic chain and, on clear days, much of the Massif Central.

Beyond the Puys, the region has lakes in former craters, the high Monts Dore with the Sancy massif, and a volcanic theme park. Walking, cycling and paragliding are popular in the warmer months; in winter, the higher slopes have small ski areas.

Where to stay, food and business

For a short stay, the area around the Place de Jaude and the old town is central and well served by the tramway. The university and hospital districts are convenient for academic and medical visits, while country houses and guesthouses in the volcano area offer a rural setting within a short drive. Auvergne cuisine is hearty: cheeses such as Saint-Nectaire, Bleu d'Auvergne, Cantal and Salers, dishes such as truffade and potée, and lentils from Le Puy.

Business travellers come for the tyre and rubber industry, pharmaceuticals, research and the university. A chauffeur by the hour can link meetings in the city with sites on the outskirts.

Day trips and practical tips

Clermont-Ferrand sits at the centre of the Auvergne, so a wide range of landscapes and historic towns are within easy reach for a day out, many of them hard to reach without a car.

  • The Puy de Dôme and the Chaîne des Puys
  • Vichy, the spa town on the Allier
  • Le Puy-en-Velay, a starting point of the Way of St James
  • Salers and the volcanic Cantal mountains
  • Thiers, the traditional cutlery town

The Auvergne climate is more continental than Geneva's: hot in summer, cold in winter, with snow on the high ground. Allow for changeable weather on volcano walks and carry layers. France uses the euro, and you should keep a passport or ID card with you as the route crosses the border.
