Scientific conferences at CERN: arrival logistics for researchers

Visiting CERN for a conference or research stay? Where the site lies on the Franco-Swiss border, where visitors stay in the Pays de Gex, and transfers.

CERN's main site lies in Meyrin, on the outskirts of Geneva and straddling the Franco-Swiss border, a short drive from Geneva Airport. Visiting scientists usually stay either in Geneva or across the border in the Pays de Gex, around towns such as Saint-Genis-Pouilly and Ferney-Voltaire, which makes transport between airport, accommodation and laboratory the main logistical question. AirportsTransfers.ch takes researchers directly from the arrivals hall to CERN's reception or their lodgings on either side of the border.

  • Location: Meyrin, on the Franco-Swiss border, a short drive from GVA
  • Accommodation: Geneva, Meyrin, or the Pays de Gex in France
  • Border: some routes cross into France; carry your passport or identity card
  • Registration: follow your host's instructions for access and badges
  • Transfers: door-to-door, with posters, laptops and luggage

A laboratory on the border

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is home to the Large Hadron Collider, whose ring runs underground beneath both Switzerland and France. The main Meyrin site, with its offices, auditoriums and the visitor centre known as the Science Gateway, is on the Swiss side, close to the border crossing. Other sites lie in France, including Prévessin. For conference participants, most activity takes place on the Meyrin site, but always check the address in your invitation: experiments and some meetings are held elsewhere.

Getting there by car from Geneva Airport is quick outside rush hour. At peak commuting times, traffic around Meyrin and on the roads to and from France can slow down, so leave a margin for the opening session of a conference.

Where visiting researchers stay

There are three broad options. CERN has its own on-site accommodation for users and visitors, often in high demand. Geneva offers the widest choice of hotels, especially around the station and the right bank. Many long-term visitors rent in the Pays de Gex, the French area between the Jura mountains and Geneva, where towns like Saint-Genis-Pouilly, Ferney-Voltaire and Prévessin-Moëns are close to the laboratory. For short conference stays, a hotel in Geneva or Meyrin is usually the simplest choice; for research stays of several weeks, accommodation in France is common.

  • book early for large collaboration meetings, when demand peaks
  • check your phone plan for roaming if you stay in France
  • keep both Swiss francs and euros or a card that works in both

Registration and access

Access to CERN sites is controlled. Conference participants and visiting scientists receive instructions from their hosts or the conference organisers on how to register and obtain a badge or access card. Allow time on your first day for this step and bring your passport or identity document. Your chauffeur can drop you at the reception area or entrance specified in your instructions; private vehicles may not have access to all parts of the site.

Transport during your stay

Public transport links Geneva and the CERN area, and some visitors cycle between the Pays de Gex and the laboratory in good weather. For arrival and departure days, though, a private transfer avoids carrying suitcases, poster tubes and laptops on trams and buses. A chauffeur by the hour, minimum two hours, can also be convenient for a group of collaborators visiting several sites, or for a day combining CERN with meetings at international organisations or the University of Geneva.

If you have a free afternoon, the Science Gateway is worth a visit even for specialists, as it presents the laboratory's work to the public through exhibitions and architecture that echo its research. Geneva's lakefront and old town are also within easy reach in the evening, and the Jura foothills behind the Pays de Gex offer walks with wide views over the lake and the Alps on clear days.

Departure and onward travel

CERN's proximity to the airport makes evening flights after a full conference day realistic. Plan your departure transfer from the conference venue or your accommodation, allowing for rush-hour traffic and check-in. If you are continuing your trip, Lausanne is 61 km (about 45 minutes) away, and Lyon in France 150 km (around 1 h 45); both are common onward destinations for researchers visiting other institutions.

Booking a CERN transfer

AirportsTransfers.ch offers online booking with the fixed price per vehicle shown before you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Research groups and institutes can receive an invoice. The chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, tracks your flight and helps with luggage, posters and equipment. Child seats are available on request for researchers travelling with family. For group arrivals or multi-day plans, contact the team 24/7 at +41 78 346 56 77 by phone or WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

How far is CERN from Geneva Airport?
CERN's main site in Meyrin is a short drive from Geneva Airport. Traffic at commuting times can lengthen the journey, so allow a margin for morning sessions.
Where do visiting scientists usually stay?
On-site accommodation is available but in demand. Many visitors stay in Geneva or Meyrin, or across the border in the Pays de Gex, around Saint-Genis-Pouilly or Ferney-Voltaire.
Does the transfer to CERN cross the border?
The main Meyrin site is on the Swiss side, so the airport transfer usually stays in Switzerland. Trips to accommodation in the Pays de Gex or to sites in France cross the border.
