Visiting academics at the University of Geneva arrive at an airport only a short drive from the city centre, where most university buildings are clustered around the Plainpalais district, the Parc des Bastions and the banks of the Arve. The practical challenges are finding the right building among several sites and organising short-term accommodation. AirportsTransfers.ch drives visiting researchers from the arrivals hall directly to their faculty, guesthouse or hotel, with room for books, posters and equipment.
- From the airport: a short drive to the city centre, longer at rush hour
- Main sites: Uni Bastions, Uni Mail, Uni Dufour, science buildings by the Arve, the medical centre
- Housing: university guest housing, serviced apartments, hotels
- Getting around: trams, buses and walking; a car for arrival and departure days
- Admin: follow your host department's instructions for access and registration
The university in the city
Unlike campuses built on a single site, the University of Geneva is woven into the city. Uni Bastions, its historic building, stands in the Parc des Bastions below the old town, facing the Reformation Wall. Uni Mail, a large modern building near the Plainpalais plain, houses several faculties in the humanities and social sciences. Uni Dufour is close to the Place Neuve, while the science faculties occupy buildings near the Arve river and the medical faculty is based at the university medical centre near the cantonal hospital. Specialised institutes are scattered further afield.
The Geneva Graduate Institute, focused on international relations and development, is a separate institution with a campus near the international district and the lake; many visiting scholars have links with both.
Short-stay accommodation
Geneva's housing market is tight, and finding a place for a few weeks or months takes planning. Visiting academics generally consider:
- guest rooms or apartments offered through the university or partner foundations
- serviced apartments, available for short periods in the city centre
- hotels for short visits, especially around the station and Plainpalais
- shared or sublet flats, found through academic networks
Contact your host department early; they usually know which options visiting staff have used in the past. For stays of several weeks, some visitors also look at nearby French towns, which adds a border crossing to the daily commute.
Arrival day
After landing, the city centre is a short drive away. With a private transfer, the chauffeur meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and takes you directly to your accommodation, or to the department if you are expected straight away. If your housing is available only from a certain hour, consider leaving luggage at the department or arranging a hotel for the first night. Bring a printed copy of your invitation letter and host contact details.
Many visiting academics arrive with more than standard luggage: books, a second laptop, a rolled poster for a seminar, or in some cases laboratory items. Declare bulky items when you book, so that a suitably sized vehicle is sent.
Getting around during your stay
Geneva is compact, and its tram and bus network connects the university sites well. Many people walk between Uni Bastions, Uni Mail and the old town. For days with appointments outside the city, such as at CERN, at an international organisation or at EPFL in Lausanne, 61 km and about 45 minutes away, a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) avoids juggling timetables, especially if you are travelling with colleagues or guests.
Geneva also rewards the time between seminars. The old town above Uni Bastions, the lakefront with the Jet d'Eau, and the museums of art, history and science are all within walking distance of the main university buildings, and the lake and the Salève offer fresh air at weekends.
Departure and leaving well
On departure day, plan pick-up from your accommodation with a margin for traffic and check-in. If you are returning keys to a guest apartment or handing over a shared office, schedule that before the transfer. Book the return transfer when you book the arrival, so your last day is not spent arranging transport.
Booking a transfer for your academic visit
With AirportsTransfers.ch, reservations are made online: you see the fixed price per vehicle before paying by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and universities or research groups can request an invoice. The chauffeur follows your flight, waits if it is late, and helps with bags and equipment. Child seats are available on request for families accompanying visiting researchers. For multiple visitors or a programme spanning several days, call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77, 24/7.
