Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval

Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval lies 72 km from Geneva Airport, roughly a 75-minute drive via the A40 motorway to Cluses and then up the Giffre valley through Taninges and Samoëns. It is the last village at the head of the valley, a quiet base with a gateway to the Grand Massif ski area. AirportsTransfers.ch runs private transfers there directly from the arrivals hall at GVA.

The journey up the Giffre valley

Leaving Geneva, the route crosses into France and joins the A40, the motorway that runs towards Chamonix. You leave it at Cluses and head north-east towards Taninges, where the road enters the Giffre valley proper. From there it is a pleasant drive past Morillon and through Samoëns, and Sixt is the end of the road for most of the year, tucked beneath steep limestone walls. The valley road is well maintained, but the last kilometres can be wintry, and early-morning ice is common in the shaded stretches. Because the valley is a dead end, there is little through traffic, so the main delays come from the motorway section on peak Saturdays rather than from the village itself.

Skiing at Sixt and the Grand Massif

Sixt has its own small ski sector with runs suited to beginners and relaxed intermediates, and lifts that give access towards the wider Grand Massif, the large linked area that also includes Samoëns, Morillon, Les Carroz and Flaine. This means you can enjoy a peaceful base while still having a big network within reach when you want longer days on the slopes. Many guests drive or take a shuttle down the valley to Samoëns to catch the main gondola into the heart of the area, which is worth planning if you want to ski Flaine's higher, more open terrain. The surrounding mountains offer serious ski touring and off-piste, but this is high, avalanche-prone country, and a qualified guide is essential.

The village and the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval

The village takes its name from the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval, a vast horseshoe of cliffs at the head of the valley, laced with waterfalls in spring and early summer. The area around it is a protected nature reserve, which gives Sixt a very different feel from busier resorts: fewer shops, more silence and a strong sense of being in wild mountain country. In winter, access towards the cirque depends on snow conditions, but a walk or snowshoe outing in its direction is one of the most memorable things to do in the valley, and chamois can sometimes be spotted on the surrounding slopes. In winter the valley floor is used for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter walks, so non-skiers in a group have plenty to do. The old village centre, with its former abbey buildings and stone houses, is compact and easy to walk around. Accommodation is mainly in chalets, gîtes and small residences spread along the valley.

When to go and what to expect

The season generally runs from December to the end of March, with the best snow cover typically from January onwards. Because Sixt sits relatively low in the valley, snow in the village itself can vary from year to year, but the higher terrain of the Grand Massif is reachable when the valley is green. February holiday weeks are the busiest, though Sixt stays calmer than most. Carry snow chains or ensure your vehicle is equipped for winter conditions, and expect slower driving after a fresh snowfall. If you are bringing cross-country skis as well as alpine equipment, mention it when booking so there is space for everything.

Planning your departure

For the trip back to Geneva, leave around three hours before a flight on a winter Saturday, a little less midweek. The first part of the journey down the valley is usually quick; the A40 and the approach to the airport are where queues build. Packing the evening before and agreeing a clear pick-up point in the village helps, since some chalets are on narrow lanes where a larger vehicle needs a moment to turn.
