Getting there with children
The route follows the motorway along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, then heads inland towards Bulle. From there, the road passes beneath the hilltop town of Gruyères and follows the Sarine valley through the Pays-d'Enhaut, past Château-d'Oex, to Rougemont. The valley road is scenic and winding in places, so a snack and a window seat help children sensitive to car sickness. Depending on conditions, the route via Aigle and the Col des Mosses may be used instead.
There is no border crossing, and the journey is manageable without a stop, although a break is always possible. Tell us the ages of your children at booking so the right seats are installed.
What families should know about Rougemont
Rougemont is one of the most attractive villages in the region, with chalets decorated with carved and painted facades and a Romanesque church that dates back to a medieval priory, next to a castle. It is quieter than nearby Gstaad, with a relaxed atmosphere that suits families who prefer a peaceful base.
The cable car from the village rises to the Videmanette, a high area with impressive views and terrain that leans towards confident skiers; it is well known for its off-piste opportunities, which should only be explored with a qualified guide. For young children and beginners, gentler slopes are found elsewhere in the Gstaad ski region, notably around Saanenmöser and Schönried, a short drive away. Many families staying in Rougemont therefore plan their days: older children and parents ski the Videmanette, while younger ones learn on the gentler areas nearby.
This flexibility is useful for families with mixed abilities but requires a little organisation. A private chauffeur by the hour can be helpful on days when the family splits between areas, or to reach lesson meeting points with small children and equipment.
Rougemont also suits families who value a sense of place. Children enjoy spotting the carved animals and inscriptions on the old chalet facades, and the village is small enough to explore on foot in an afternoon. After a day on the slopes, the quiet main street and the absence of heavy traffic make it easy to relax with young children.
Ski schools and the youngest skiers
Ski schools in the Gstaad region offer group and private lessons for children, with beginner areas on gentle slopes. Some families prefer private lessons for young children, which allow flexible timing and a meeting point that suits them. During February and at New Year, the region is busy and lessons should be booked well ahead.
The core winter months, from early January to early March, usually bring the most reliable snow, with higher slopes holding better than those at village level.
Off-slope activities
- Gstaad: its car-free promenade, shops and ice rink are a short drive away.
- Snowshoeing and winter walks: marked trails along the valley and through the forest.
- Sledging: runs and gentle slopes in the region.
- Château-d'Oex: hot-air balloons and paper-cut art, just down the valley.
- Scenic train: the panoramic railway through the valley is a fun outing for children.
Packing and planning the arrival
Pack warm, waterproof layers for each child, spare gloves and hats, goggles and sun cream. Equipment can be hired in the region, so you need not bring children's skis. If you bring skis or snowboards, declare them at booking.
Plan to arrive in daylight so you can settle in and collect equipment, and keep the first evening calm. Your chauffeur carries winter equipment and adapts to snowy roads.
