The Palais in context

The Palais des Nations was built in the 1930s as the headquarters of the League of Nations, and after the Second World War it became the European seat of the United Nations. It is one of the busiest centres of multilateral diplomacy in the world, hosting thousands of meetings each year on human rights, trade, health, disarmament and humanitarian affairs. The complex stands in the large Ariana Park overlooking Lake Geneva, where peacocks roam the lawns, and contains historic rooms such as the Assembly Hall and the Council Chamber, the latter decorated with large murals by José Maria Sert. Gifts from member states, from sculptures to tapestries, are displayed throughout the building and grounds. The Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room is known for its striking ceiling by Miquel Barceló, made with coloured paint stalactites.

Visiting tips

Visits to the Palais are by guided tour only, and the tours need to be reserved in advance through the official UN Geneva visitor channels. A valid passport or national identity card is required for security screening, and you should arrive in good time for the checks, which resemble those at an airport. Large bags and suitcases are not allowed inside, so if you are coming straight from a flight, leaving luggage in your vehicle is useful. Tours run in several languages and give an overview of the history and work of the UN in Geneva. Meeting rooms may be in use, so the exact route of a tour can vary. Before going, check the official site for the current schedule and conditions. Tours may be suspended during certain high-level conferences, so it is worth confirming your reservation shortly before the day of your visit.

Around the Place des Nations

Outside the Palais, the Place des Nations is a large square with fountains and the rows of member state flags along the façade. Its most famous sight is the Broken Chair, a giant wooden chair with a shattered leg, a symbol of opposition to landmines and cluster munitions. Across the avenue are the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum and the Ariana Museum of ceramics and glass. Many international organisations have their headquarters in the surrounding district, among them the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which is why the area is often called the international quarter.

Delegates, NGOs and business travellers

Many people heading to the Palais are delegates, NGO representatives or experts attending conferences, often with tight schedules and luggage straight from the airport. A Mercedes E-Class Business Sedan suits up to three passengers; a Mercedes S-Class First Class Sedan is available for senior officials; and a Mercedes V-Class van or a Mercedes Sprinter minibus can move a whole delegation together. A chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) can wait between sessions or take you on to other organisations in the international district. Invoices are available for organisations and companies.

Getting there: tram, bus or car

The Place des Nations is well served by public transport: a tram line from the city terminates there, and several bus lines, including connections from the airport area, stop nearby. Hotel guests in Geneva usually receive a free local public transport pass. A private car is the most direct option from the airport with luggage, or when you need to arrive at a particular gate on time for an early session. At peak hours and during major conferences, traffic and security around the area can be heavier, so leave a margin.
