Bulky items such as skis, snowboards, golf bags, bicycles and pushchairs can all travel on a private transfer from Geneva, provided they are declared when you book so the right vehicle is sent. A saloon car is designed for a few passengers with suitcases, while a van or minibus has the length and volume for sports equipment. AirportsTransfers.ch asks for an accurate luggage count at booking for exactly this reason.
- Declare at booking: every suitcase, ski or snowboard bag and other bulky item
- Business Sedan: Mercedes E-Class, up to 3 passengers and 3 bags
- Van: Mercedes V-Class, up to 7 passengers and 10 bags, with room for skis
- Minibus: Mercedes Sprinter, for groups with plenty of equipment
- Why it matters: a vehicle that is too small cannot be fixed at the kerb
What counts as oversized luggage
For transfer purposes, oversized luggage means anything longer, wider or more awkward than a standard suitcase. In Geneva the most common examples are ski and snowboard bags, often with separate boot bags, followed by golf bags in summer. Bicycle boxes, pushchairs, travel cots, musical instruments, large camera cases and medical equipment such as folding wheelchairs also fall into this category. Even when the item is light, its length or shape determines where it can go in a vehicle.
Hand luggage counts too. A family of four with four suitcases, four cabin bags, two ski bags and a pushchair has eleven items to load, not four, and the vehicle must accommodate all of them safely without blocking seats or windows.
What fits in each vehicle
The Business Sedan, a Mercedes E-Class, is suited to up to three passengers with three standard bags. It is ideal for business travellers and couples, but it is not designed for skis. The First Class Sedan, a Mercedes S-Class, offers more comfort for a small party with normal luggage rather than more space for equipment.
The Mercedes V-Class van is the usual choice for ski holidays. It carries up to seven passengers and ten bags, and it has room for skis and snowboards, which makes it the standard option for families and small groups heading to the mountains. For larger groups, or for parties with a great deal of equipment such as several golf bags or bicycle boxes, the Mercedes Sprinter minibus provides the extra volume. If you are unsure, describe your luggage when booking or ask before you pay; it is much easier to choose the right vehicle in advance than to improvise at the airport.
How to declare bulky items
The online booking form asks for the number of passengers and the amount of luggage, with a separate field or note for skis and other special items. Be specific. Rather than writing 'some ski stuff', give the numbers: for example, four suitcases, four cabin bags, three ski bags, one snowboard bag and one pushchair. Mention unusual items explicitly, such as a bicycle box, a cello or a folding wheelchair, along with an idea of their size.
If your plans change after booking, for instance because a friend decides to bring a snowboard, update the transfer company before travelling. A single extra bag can make the difference between a comfortable load and one that does not close.
Why accurate counts prevent problems
When luggage is under-declared, the driver may arrive with a vehicle that cannot carry everything. At that point the options are limited: wait for a second vehicle, leave items behind to be sent on later, or squeeze equipment into the passenger area, which is neither safe nor permitted. All of these delay your journey and none is pleasant at the end of a long flight.
Accurate counts also matter for safety. Skis and heavy bags must be loaded so they cannot shift during braking or on mountain bends. The driver plans the load before you arrive, based on what you have declared, which is part of what makes the handover at the kerb so quick.
Practical packing tips
Use padded ski bags, and pack two pairs of skis in a double bag where possible; it reduces the number of items and protects edges. Label every bag with your name and phone number. Soft bags are easier to fit around equipment than rigid cases. Keep fragile and valuable items such as laptops and cameras in your hand luggage. If you plan to hire equipment in the resort, you can travel lighter and may be able to choose a smaller vehicle.
Remember that the airline has its own rules for sports equipment, including weight limits and fees. Check these when booking your flight; they are separate from your transfer arrangements.
Booking a transfer with room for everything
Book online and select the vehicle that fits both your group and your luggage; the fixed price for that vehicle appears before you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your chauffeur from AirportsTransfers.ch tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name sign and loads your equipment for you. Child seats can be requested in the same booking. If you have an unusual item or simply want advice on which vehicle to choose, call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77, any time of day.
