The route from Geneva Airport
From the airport the motorway heads along Lake Geneva to Lausanne, crosses the Plateau via Bern and continues past Zurich towards St. Gallen and the Rhine valley near Lake Constance. Around Bregenz the route passes through a short section of Austria before crossing into Germany near Lindau. From there it heads east into the rolling hills of the Allgäu, via Immenstadt and Sonthofen, and south up the Iller valley to Oberstdorf, which sits in a wide basin surrounded by mountains. The route is mostly on motorway and main roads with no high passes, which makes it reliable in winter, although traffic around Zurich and near Lake Constance can add time at weekends. A comfort stop along the way is easily arranged with your driver.
The ski areas
Oberstdorf has several separate ski mountains, each with its own feel. The Nebelhorn, reached by cable car from the edge of town, is the highest and offers big views over a large number of Alpine peaks, along with some long and demanding descents, including a well-known run back towards the valley and freeride terrain for experienced skiers with a guide. The Fellhorn and the Kanzelwand together form a cross-border ski area shared with the Kleinwalsertal in Austria, with wide, varied pistes suited to intermediates. The Söllereck, closer to town, is smaller and particularly well suited to families and beginners. Local buses link the different lift stations, so you can choose a mountain according to the weather and your mood each day.
Oberstdorf is also one of Germany's best-known centres for Nordic sports. Its ski jumps host international competitions, including the opening event of the famous Four Hills Tournament, and its cross-country trails along the valley floor are extensive and well prepared, attracting both athletes and recreational skiers. Watching a training session on the jumps is a memorable sight even for those who would never try it themselves.
The town
Unlike many purpose-built resorts, Oberstdorf is a real market town with a pedestrianised centre, traditional Bavarian houses, a large parish church and a wide choice of shops, cafés and restaurants. Evenings are lively but relaxed, with hearty Allgäu cuisine such as Kässpatzen, the local cheese noodles, on most menus. Non-skiers have plenty to do: winter walks into the side valleys, sledging, ice skating at the ice sports centre, and visits to the Breitachklamm gorge nearby, which is spectacular when its walls are covered in ice. Accommodation ranges from traditional guesthouses to modern hotels and apartments.
When to go and practical tips
The season generally runs from December to March, with the Nebelhorn often holding snow longer than the lower areas. January and early March are quieter, while German school holidays and weekends are busier. Saturday is a common changeover day. Winter tyres are mandatory in German winter conditions, and our vehicles are equipped accordingly, with chains carried when needed. As the journey takes around five hours, an early flight into Geneva helps you arrive in daylight. Mention skis, snowboards or cross-country equipment when you book.
Planning your return
Allow five hours for the drive back to Geneva, plus check-in time and a buffer for traffic around Lake Constance and Zurich. An afternoon or evening flight is easiest. Your chauffeur will confirm the pick-up time in advance.
