The journey from Geneva Airport
The drive crosses the Swiss Plateau towards Zurich and continues east to the region of Lake Constance. From there the route enters southern Germany and continues through the rolling green Allgäu to Füssen, with the Alps rising ahead. Depending on traffic, some routes pass briefly through neighbouring areas around the lake; your chauffeur chooses the smoothest option on the day.
By train the journey involves several changes, often including Munich or Kempten, and the final stretch is on a regional line. A private car is far more convenient, especially if you plan to stay in a hotel near the castles, where public transport is limited.
Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau
Neuschwanstein Castle, built from 1869 for King Ludwig II of Bavaria, stands on a rocky ridge above a gorge, with turrets and white walls that inspired countless fairy-tale images. Inside, the rooms reflect the king's passion for medieval legends and the operas of Richard Wagner. Just below, the yellow Hohenschwangau Castle was Ludwig's childhood home and offers a more intimate look at royal life. Together, the castles and their palace setting attract visitors from around the world.
Visits inside both castles are by guided tour with timed tickets, and they often sell out in advance during busy periods, so reserve before you travel. From the village of Hohenschwangau, footpaths, buses and horse-drawn carriages climb towards Neuschwanstein. The Marienbrücke, a footbridge over the Pöllat gorge, gives the classic view of the castle, though access can be restricted in winter or during repairs.
The town of Füssen
Füssen itself is often overlooked, but its old town is charming, with painted façades, narrow lanes and the High Castle, a former residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg, which now holds an art gallery. The baroque former monastery of St. Mang houses the town museum, which tells the story of Füssen's long tradition of lute and violin making.
The town sits on the Lech river, with the Lech Falls just outside the centre. Nearby lakes include the Forggensee, a large reservoir with boat trips in summer, and the Alpsee and Schwansee near the castles, where clear water reflects the mountains. Walks and cycle paths connect them all.
Where to stay and day trips
Staying in Füssen gives you restaurants, shops and the old town; hotels in Hohenschwangau, at the foot of the castles, let you visit early before the crowds. Schwangau and the lakeside villages offer quieter options and holiday apartments for families. The Tegelberg cable car climbs to a viewpoint over the castles and lakes.
The Wieskirche, a UNESCO-listed rococo pilgrimage church, is a short drive away, and Linderhof Palace, another of Ludwig's creations, and Oberammergau, famous for its painted houses, make a scenic day out. With a chauffeur by the hour, minimum two hours, you can combine several of these with ease.
Practical tips
Summer and early autumn are the busiest seasons, with long queues and full car parks near the castles. Arriving early in the day or visiting in spring or late autumn makes for a calmer experience. Winter brings snow and a magical atmosphere, but some paths may close; dress warmly and wear good shoes.
On the return journey to Geneva, allow plenty of time as traffic around Zurich can be heavy, especially on Friday and Sunday afternoons. A return transfer can be booked at the same time as your arrival.
