Le Locle
Le Locle is 142 km from Geneva Airport, around 1 h 45 by road, and the journey stays in Switzerland until the very last kilometres before the French border. This small town in a high Jura valley is where the regional watch industry took root, and it shares a UNESCO World Heritage listing with its larger neighbour La Chaux-de-Fonds. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you from arrivals straight to your hotel or to a manufacture in town.
- Distance from GVA: 142 km by road
- Drive time: about 1 h 45
- Border crossing: none on the way; France is just beyond the town
- Best for: watchmaking history, industry visits, Jura nature
- Getting there: via Lausanne, Yverdon, Neuchâtel and the Jura heights
From Geneva Airport to the Le Locle valley
The drive begins on the A1 past Lausanne, then follows the A5 along the north shore of Lake Neuchâtel. At Neuchâtel the road climbs steeply into the Jura, through the Vue des Alpes tunnel, and reaches La Chaux-de-Fonds; Le Locle lies a few minutes further west, down the same high valley. The last part of the trip is through pastures and pine woods, with long stone farmhouses typical of the Neuchâtel mountains.
At around a thousand metres above sea level, the valley sees real winters. Snow and cold mornings are common from late autumn to early spring, so winter tyres are essential and travel times can stretch in heavy weather. A chauffeur used to the Jura roads removes the guesswork if you are arriving after a long flight.
The town that taught the Jura to make watches
Local tradition credits Daniel JeanRichard, a craftsman of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, with bringing watchmaking to Le Locle, and from here the skill spread across the Jura arc. Like La Chaux-de-Fonds, the town was largely rebuilt in a regular pattern of streets designed around the needs of watchmakers, with long rows of windows facing the light. Several well-known manufactures still operate here, which is why many visitors are business guests, suppliers or collectors rather than holidaymakers.
The Château des Monts, an elegant eighteenth-century country house on the hillside above the town, holds the municipal museum of horology. Its collection of clocks, watches and automata is displayed in period rooms, giving a more intimate picture of the trade than a large modern museum. Together with the International Museum of Horology in La Chaux-de-Fonds, it makes a natural pair for anyone interested in the history of time measurement.
The underground mills of the Col-des-Roches
Le Locle's other unusual sight lies beneath the ground. At the Col-des-Roches, on the western edge of the town, the water draining from the valley was used for centuries to power mills built inside caves. Today the Moulins souterrains du Col-des-Roches are a museum where you can descend through the rock to see the restored wheels and machinery, and learn how millers harnessed a river that had no surface outlet. It is a short visit, cool even in summer, and a good choice in wet weather.
Nature on the French border
Le Locle is a fine base for the Doubs, the river that marks the border between Switzerland and France in this part of the Jura. A short drive leads to Les Brenets, where boats run along the Lac des Brenets, a long, narrow stretch of the river between limestone cliffs, towards the Saut du Doubs waterfall. Walking paths follow the river through the forest, and the scenery is among the most photographed in the canton.
- Lac des Brenets and the Saut du Doubs waterfall
- La Chaux-de-Fonds, its museums and Le Corbusier houses
- The Vallée de La Brévine, known for its cold winters and lakeside walks
- Neuchâtel and its lakefront, under an hour away
Where to stay and practical tips
Le Locle has a handful of hotels in and around the centre, and some visitors choose to stay in La Chaux-de-Fonds, where the choice is wider, and travel the few minutes between the two towns. Restaurants serve Jura specialities such as smoked sausages, local cheeses and, in season, dishes with mushrooms gathered in the surrounding forests. If you are visiting several manufactures or suppliers in the area on one trip, a chauffeur booked by the hour, for at least two hours, keeps meetings on schedule without parking worries. Pack warm layers whatever the season: the high valley can be fresh even in July.
