Albertville
Albertville is 141 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 30 by road, and the route crosses the border into France shortly after leaving the airport. The town is known above all for hosting the 1992 Winter Olympics and for its medieval hilltop quarter of Conflans, and it is the natural gateway to the ski valleys of the Tarentaise. AirportsTransfers.ch can take you there directly, or straight on to a resort higher up.

- Best for: Olympic history, Savoie food, a base between Annecy and the ski resorts
- Getting there: via Annecy and its lake, or by motorway via Chambéry
The route from Geneva Airport to Albertville
Leaving Geneva, the road crosses into France and follows the A41 motorway south towards Annecy. From there two options exist. The more scenic follows the western shore of Lake Annecy, then continues through Faverges and Ugine into the Arly valley and down to Albertville. The other stays on the motorway network via Chambéry and joins the valley road from the south-west. The lake road is lovely in summer but slower in traffic; the motorway is generally the steadier choice in winter. Your chauffeur picks the faster option on the day.
Winter Saturdays are the main thing to plan around. Albertville is the bottleneck through which traffic for many of the large Tarentaise resorts passes, and the roads around the town can be very busy on changeover days. If you are only going to Albertville, aim for a weekday or early arrival; if you are continuing to a resort, factor in extra time.
Olympic heritage and the town today
The 1992 Winter Olympics put Albertville on the international map, and the town still carries the legacy: the opening and closing ceremonies were held here, and the Olympic hall and other venues remain in use for sport and events. A small museum and memorial space retell the story of the Games, which were spread across the surrounding valleys, with events held in resorts such as Courchevel, Méribel, Val d'Isère and Les Arcs.
Modern Albertville is a working Savoyard town rather than a tourist resort, with a lively market, shopping streets and squares around the town hall. It is practical for visitors who want a lower-altitude base with year-round services, or who are in the area for business with the region's manufacturers, sports federations or outdoor-equipment companies.
Conflans, the medieval village above the town
The highlight for most visitors is Conflans, a fortified medieval village perched on a spur above the confluence of the Arly and the Isère. You enter through an old town gate and climb a cobbled street lined with stone houses, craft workshops and small squares with fountains. The Maison Rouge, a brick building with an Italianate look, houses a local history museum, and from the terraces at the top there are wide views over the valley and the surrounding peaks. It is a short climb from the centre of Albertville and makes a calm contrast with the busy roads below.
Savoie food, Beaufort and day trips
Albertville sits at the foot of the Beaufortain, the valley that gives its name to Beaufort, one of the great mountain cheeses of France. The town of Beaufort is about half an hour away, and the drive continues to the Roselend dam and lake, a striking high mountain landscape in summer when the pass is open. Savoyard dishes such as tartiflette, fondue and diots sausages with polenta appear on menus throughout the area, along with the local white wines of Savoie.
- Annecy and its lake, less than an hour back towards Geneva
- The Beaufortain and the Roselend dam in summer
- The Tarentaise resorts, from Courchevel and Méribel to Les Arcs
- Chambéry, the historic capital of Savoie
Practical tips
In winter, chains or winter tyres are mandatory in the French Alps under the mountain law, so a properly equipped vehicle matters if you continue upwards. Summer is the season for the high passes, lake swimming at Annecy and walking in the Beaufortain, while spring and autumn are quieter and good for exploring Conflans and the markets. Keep your passport or ID card handy for the border crossing, and allow extra time on Saturdays in the ski season.
