La Côte is the vineyard region on the northern shore of Lake Geneva between Nyon and Morges, lying entirely between Geneva and Lausanne, which is 61 km or about 45 minutes from Geneva Airport. It is the closest large wine area to the airport, with sloping vineyards facing the lake and the Alps, wine villages and a string of castles, and AirportsTransfers.ch can organise a chauffeured tasting day that starts directly from your flight or hotel.

A gentle wine landscape
Unlike the steep terraces of Lavaux further east, La Côte has wide, gently rolling slopes rising from the lake towards the Jura. The vineyards are interspersed with orchards, woods and villages, and the views across the water to Mont Blanc on clear days are one of the region's great pleasures. It is the largest wine-growing area of the canton of Vaud, and its wines are generally fresh, light and approachable. The region is also very accessible: the motorway between Geneva and Lausanne runs along its lower edge, so the first vineyards are only a short drive from the airport. This makes it easy to fit a visit into a business trip or the last day of a holiday, even with a flight to catch in the evening.
Wines and villages
Chasselas dominates, giving crisp, delicate whites that change subtly from one village to the next. Féchy and Mont-sur-Rolle are among the best-known names, while Aubonne, Begnins, Tartegnin and Bougy-Villars each have their own character. Red grapes include Gamay and Pinot Noir, as well as Gamaret and Garanoir, two crossings developed in Switzerland that give deeper-coloured wines. Around Luins and Vinzel, the regional speciality is the malakoff, a fried cheese fritter served with a glass of white wine. Many villages have family estates and cooperatives offering tastings, often in old vaulted cellars. The Signal de Bougy, a park on a hill above the vineyards, offers one of the finest panoramas over the lake and the Alps and makes a good break during a tasting day. Higher up, towards the Jura foothills, the villages become quieter and the vineyards give way to pasture and forest.
Castles along the shore
La Côte is rich in castles, many of them open to visitors. Nyon, an old Roman town, has a castle with white towers overlooking the lake. Just outside it, the Château de Prangins houses a branch of the Swiss National Museum, with collections on Swiss history and a kitchen garden of historic vegetable varieties. Coppet Castle, closer to Geneva, is associated with Madame de Staël and her literary circle. Rolle has a castle on the waterfront, and Morges a solid square castle containing military museums. The Château d'Aubonne, with its unusual tower, and the brick castle of Vufflens, privately owned, add to the list. Combining a castle in the morning with a cellar and lunch in the afternoon is a well-balanced day.
Planning a tasting day
A good plan is to start with a lake town such as Nyon or Rolle, then head up into the vineyards for two or three cellar visits, with lunch in a village or on the lakeshore. Many estates prefer visits by appointment, especially for groups, and some regional events see cellars open their doors to the public. Autumn, with the grape harvest and golden vines, is the most atmospheric time, but spring and summer are pleasant too, with long evenings on terraces overlooking the water. Since the roads between villages are small and Swiss rules on drinking and driving are strict, it is wise to let someone else drive. A chauffeur by the hour gives complete flexibility to linger or change the programme.
