The Jura mountains near Geneva: nature and cross-country skiing

The Jura ridge closes the horizon north-west of Geneva. Discover Col de la Faucille, the Crêt de la Neige summit, protected nature and Nordic skiing close to the city.

The Jura mountains are Geneva's closest high ground: the long wooded ridge that fills the north-western horizon is under an hour from Geneva Airport, with Col de la Faucille, the Crêt de la Neige summit and some of the region's most extensive cross-country ski tracks all within easy reach. A driver from AirportsTransfers.ch can take you from the airport or your hotel up the hairpins above Gex in a fraction of the time it takes to plan a public transport connection.

  • Distance: the Col de la Faucille is a short drive from Geneva Airport, well under an hour
  • Border crossing: the main French Jura sites cross the border into France via the Pays de Gex
  • Highest point: the Crêt de la Neige, the highest summit of the Jura range
  • Winter: Nordic skiing at La Vattay, Les Rousses and the Swiss Jura, plus small downhill areas
  • Summer: ridge walks, flower meadows, wildlife and long views over the Alps

A different kind of mountain

Unlike the jagged Alps, the Jura is a range of long, parallel limestone folds covered in spruce and beech, with high pastures, dry-stone walls and scattered farms. The ridge nearest Geneva, known as the Haute Chaîne, rises steeply above the Pays de Gex and then rolls away to the north-west in gentler valleys. The landscape is quieter and less developed than the big Alpine resorts, and that is precisely its appeal: a morning on the ridge feels remote, yet the lights of Geneva are visible below. On clear days the panorama runs the full length of the Alps, from the Bernese Oberland to Mont Blanc and beyond, with the whole of Lake Geneva at your feet.

Col de la Faucille and Mont Rond

The Col de la Faucille is the pass on the road from Gex to Mijoux, reached by a series of hairpins that climb through the forest from the plain. It is the gateway to the Monts Jura area, which links small downhill slopes at the Col and at Lélex and Crozet on either side of the ridge. From the Col a lift climbs towards Mont Rond, a classic viewpoint over the lake and the Alps, operating in winter and in the summer season. The Col itself has a cluster of hotels and restaurants, a summer toboggan run and easy walks, making it a popular family stop. Your driver can drop you at the Col and collect you on the other side at Mijoux or in the Valserine valley, which avoids walking back the same way.

Crêt de la Neige and the nature reserve

The Crêt de la Neige, a little north of the Col, is the highest summit of the entire Jura range, rising above a bare crest of pasture and limestone. It sits within the Haute Chaîne du Jura national nature reserve, which protects a long section of the ridge and its high meadows. Chamois, marmots on some slopes, and birds of prey are frequently seen, and in early summer the pastures are covered in wild flowers. Reaching the summit is a proper hike on rough paths, usually approached from the Valserine side or from the ridge above the Col; it is a full half-day or more on foot, with a steady climb. Paths are well marked, but the crest is exposed to wind and fog, so check the forecast and bring layers. Rules of the reserve apply: dogs on a lead, no camping, and stay on paths in sensitive areas.

Nordic skiing in the Jura

The Jura's high plateaus and gentle valleys make it one of the best-known Nordic skiing regions in France and Switzerland. Near Geneva, La Vattay in the Valserine valley is a large cross-country area with many kilometres of groomed tracks through the forest, for both classic and skating technique. Further north, the area around Les Rousses offers an extensive Nordic network along the Franco-Swiss border. On the Swiss side, La Givrine above Saint-Cergue and the Vallée de Joux are popular with skiers from Geneva and Lausanne. Snowshoe trails, sledging slopes and dog-sledding outings complete the winter picture. Snow cover at these altitudes varies from year to year, so check the conditions before you go; the tracks are best after a good fall and a cold night.

Planning a day in the Jura

  • Winter: arrive early to ski in fresh tracks, lunch at a mountain restaurant, back in Geneva by late afternoon
  • Summer: hike from the Col to the ridge and down to Mijoux, with a pick-up arranged at the end
  • Autumn: the beech woods change colour and the air is often clear for the Alpine panorama

Winter tyres and, in heavy snow, chains are essential on the Faucille road; professional drivers are used to this, which removes the stress of a steep icy climb. Temperatures on the ridge are much lower than in Geneva, so pack hats and gloves even in spring.
