The route from Geneva Airport to Gryon
The car takes the A1 to Lausanne and the A9 past Vevey and Montreux, then continues along the Rhône valley to the Bex exit. From the small town of Bex, known for its salt mines, a road climbs steeply through forest and meadows to Gryon, perched on a sunny shelf with views across the valley to the Dents du Midi. A rack railway also runs from Bex through Gryon to Villars, but travelling with ski bags on it involves changes.
The climb is short but includes tight bends, and snow is common in winter. Professional chauffeurs drive with winter tyres and carry chains, so the arrival is as smooth as possible after your flight.
The ski area: Villars-Gryon and beyond
Gryon is one of the gateways to the Villars-Gryon ski area, which it shares with its larger neighbour Villars-sur-Ollon. Lifts from the Barboleuse area, just above the village, connect to the slopes around Les Chaux, where a broad sunny bowl offers plenty of blue and red runs. The terrain suits intermediates and progressing beginners, with tree-lined pistes that keep visibility reasonable on cloudy days.
The area is also linked with Les Diablerets, which broadens the choice considerably, and the Glacier 3000 site above the Col du Pillon is within reach for days when you want high-altitude snow and dramatic scenery. Experts should look for off-piste options with a local guide, as the Chaux and the slopes towards the Diablerets offer interesting lines after fresh snowfall.
One practical advantage of staying in Gryon is that you can be on the lifts quickly without being in the busiest part of the resort. Mornings are often calmer at the Barboleuse access than in central Villars, and at the end of the day you return to a quieter village. Nordic skiers also have options, with cross-country trails in the area and winter walking routes that follow the forest edges with views over the Rhône valley.
The village: calm and traditional
Gryon has kept its character as a mountain village, with old wooden granaries and chalets in its upper part and newer holiday homes around La Barboleuse. It is noticeably quieter than Villars, which makes it popular with families and with visitors who want a relaxed base while still having access to a sizeable ski area. A few shops, cafés and restaurants cover daily needs, and Villars is a short drive or train ride away for more choice.
Because the village spreads across several levels, telling your chauffeur the exact address at booking avoids a walk with luggage on icy lanes.
When to go and practical tips
The season normally runs from mid-December to early April. January is often quiet with good snow; February brings Swiss and international school holidays and the busiest lifts. In March the sunny exposure gives long, pleasant days.
- Saturday traffic: changeover days can slow the motorway around Lausanne and Montreux, so plan buffers for flights.
- Snow chains: the road up from Bex may require them after a storm.
- Skis: declare them when booking; the V-Class van takes skis and up to ten bags.
- Non-ski days: the salt mines in Bex and the Lake Geneva Riviera make good outings.
The return journey
On departure day, leave Gryon about three hours before your flight, with extra time on busy Saturdays or if snow is falling. The descent to Bex takes only a short while, and from there the motorway is direct to Geneva. Booking both directions together fixes your pick-up time in advance.
