Gryon
Gryon is 128 km from Geneva Airport, about 1 h 30 by road along Lake Geneva and up from Bex in the Rhône valley. It is a quiet chalet village on a sunny balcony facing the Dents du Midi, linked by lifts to the Villars ski area, so families get a calm base with access to a larger network. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you there directly, with child seats installed on request.
- Distance from GVA: 128 km
- Drive time: about 1 h 30
- Border crossing: none
- Ski area: linked with Villars, with Les Diablerets in the same region
- Best for: families who want a peaceful village and easy access to varied slopes
Getting there with the family
The route follows the motorway along the north shore of Lake Geneva past Lausanne and Montreux, then enters the Rhône valley towards Valais. Near Bex, the road leaves the valley and climbs a series of bends to Gryon and its neighbouring hamlet of La Barboleuse. The climb is short, but if your children dislike mountain roads, a snack and a window seat help.
There is no border to cross, and the motorway section is quick in normal traffic. Expect busier roads on winter Saturdays around Lausanne and in the Rhône valley. Let us know the children's ages when booking so the right seats are fitted.
Why Gryon is a good family base
Gryon has the feel of a real village, with old wooden chalets, a small centre and views across the valley to the Dents du Midi. It is less busy than its neighbour Villars, which many parents appreciate: evenings are quiet, and children can play in the snow near the chalet without crowds.
Lifts from La Barboleuse connect into the Villars ski area, which offers a good range of beginner and intermediate slopes. Children can take lessons in the wider area, while parents and older children explore further. The Villars–Gryon area is also linked with Les Diablerets, so a week can include varied terrain without long drives. For families with mixed ages, that balance between a quiet village and a well-connected ski area is the main attraction.
A little rack railway climbs from Bex through Gryon to Villars, a charming way for children to travel between villages and a highlight in itself for young train fans.
When to go matters too. The heart of the season, from early January to early March, gives the most reliable snow on the linked slopes. Swiss school sports holidays in February fill the area, so January or March weeks tend to be calmer for families with pre-school children. Around Christmas and New Year, the village is festive but busy, and lessons need booking well in advance.
Lessons and children's areas
Ski schools operate in Gryon and in Villars, with group and private lessons for children and beginner areas near the lifts. Many families choose lessons close to their accommodation to avoid travelling with small children every morning. For the youngest, a short daily lesson followed by snow play near the chalet is usually enough; older children can progress quickly on the wide intermediate runs above La Barboleuse and spend the last days of the week skiing with their parents. Book ahead in February, when Swiss and international school holidays overlap and the area is busy.
Things to do off the slopes
- Sledging and snow play on gentle slopes around the village.
- Snowshoe walks on marked trails through forest and meadows.
- Rack railway rides between Bex, Gryon and Villars.
- Villars: a short trip for skating, shops and cafés.
- Glacier 3000: above Les Diablerets, a glacier excursion with spectacular views on a clear day, better for older children.
Packing and the arrival day
Gryon is sunny, but winter mornings are cold. Pack layers, waterproof outerwear, warm boots, spare gloves, sun cream and goggles for each child. Hiring equipment locally is easy, so you may choose to leave children's skis at home. If you travel with skis or snowboards, declare them at booking.
Arriving with some daylight left makes it easier to settle into the chalet, collect hire equipment and find the lift for the next morning. The road from Bex is cleared in winter, and your chauffeur carries winter equipment for snowy days.
