Les Mosses
Les Mosses is about 127 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes by road via the Lake Geneva motorway and Aigle. It sits on the Col des Mosses, a wide mountain pass in the Vaud Alps, with no border to cross; AirportsTransfers.ch can bring you straight there from arrivals.
- Distance from GVA: about 127 km
- Drive time: around 1 h 30 min
- Border crossing: none
- Best for: cross-country skiers, beginners, families and anyone after peace and space
- Getting there: A1 and A9 to Aigle, then the pass road through Le Sépey
The road from Geneva Airport
The journey begins on the A1 towards Lausanne and continues on the A9 along the Lavaux terraces, with Lake Geneva on the right-hand side. You leave the motorway at Aigle and take the road that climbs east through the Ormonts valley. Past the village of Le Sépey, the route keeps rising until the valley opens into the broad, rolling plateau of the Col des Mosses.
The pass road is a main route linking the Rhône valley with the Pays-d'Enhaut, so it is cleared quickly after snowfall. Still, the climb from Aigle has bends and can be snowy, which is why winter tyres are compulsory in practice and chains are carried on board.
The ski area: open slopes and gentle runs
Les Mosses is a modest downhill area spread on either side of the pass, with drag lifts and chairlifts serving mostly easy and intermediate runs. The terrain is open and rounded rather than steep, which makes it a reassuring place to learn or to regain confidence after a few years away. Nearby La Lécherette adds a few more lifts in the same relaxed spirit.
The real strength of the area is Nordic skiing. The flat and gently undulating ground of the pass is ideal for cross-country trails in both classic and skating style, and the plateau is one of the well-known cross-country venues of French-speaking Switzerland. Snowshoe routes and winter walking paths cross the pastures, and the wide landscape, dotted with chalets and small farms, feels very different from the narrow, steep valleys of Valais.
For mixed groups, the resort works well because everyone can do something different on the same mountain: some can take lessons on the gentle slopes, others can set off on the cross-country loops, and walkers can follow marked winter paths, all meeting again for lunch. The lifts are short and simple, so even nervous skiers quickly find their bearings, and the quiet pistes leave plenty of room to practise turns without pressure from faster skiers.
The village and its setting
Les Mosses is less a village than a scattering of chalets, a few hotels and services along the pass road. It has a calm, simple atmosphere and attracts Swiss families, cross-country enthusiasts and day visitors from the Lausanne area. For a wider choice of restaurants and shops, Château-d'Oex lies a short drive further along the road, and Leysin and Les Diablerets are within easy reach on the other side of the Ormonts valley.
Because properties are spread along the pass, give the exact address when booking your transfer so your chauffeur drops you at the right chalet.
When to go and practical tips
The plateau's open exposure means snow can arrive early and last well, but conditions still depend on the winter. January and February are usually the most reliable months for both alpine and Nordic skiing. Weekends see more day visitors, while weekdays are often almost empty.
- Saturday traffic: the motorway around Lausanne and Montreux is the main bottleneck on winter weekends.
- Snow chains: the climb from Aigle can be snowy; a professional transfer carries chains and winter tyres.
- Equipment: cross-country skis are long, so mention them at booking alongside alpine skis.
- Combine: pair a few days here with a visit to the Lake Geneva Riviera or Gruyère region.
Going home to Geneva Airport
Plan to leave Les Mosses around three hours before your flight time, a little more on Saturday afternoons or when snow is forecast. The descent to Aigle is steady and the motorway after that is fast unless there is congestion near Lausanne. Booking the return trip together with the outward transfer saves a phone call on the last day.
