Glacier skiing in the Alps: skiing beyond the normal season

How glacier ski areas such as Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Tignes and Les Deux Alpes extend the season, what to expect on a glacier and how to reach them from Geneva.

Glacier ski areas let you ski when most resorts are closed, in late autumn, late spring and in some cases summer. The ones most often reached from Geneva are Zermatt (via Täsch, 231 km, about 2 h 35), Saas-Fee in the Valais, Tignes in the Tarentaise next to Val d'Isère (180 km, about 2 h 45) and Les Deux Alpes in the Isère. AirportsTransfers.ch drives skiers from Geneva Airport to any of them.

  • What it is: pistes prepared on permanent ice fields at high altitude
  • Main areas: Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Tignes, Les Deux Alpes
  • When: extended seasons, opening periods vary each year
  • Conditions: cold, thin air, strong sun, quick weather changes
  • Safety: stay on marked pistes, crevasses lie off-piste

What makes glacier skiing different

A glacier is a slow-moving mass of ice that survives the summer at high altitude. Ski areas built on glaciers can open earlier in autumn and stay open later in spring than resorts relying on seasonal snow, and some operate in summer too, with lifts running in the early part of the day while the snow is firm. The terrain is usually high, open and above the tree line, with wide, fairly gentle slopes because glaciers themselves tend to be smooth. That makes glacier skiing pleasant for intermediates and popular with race teams and freestyle groups who use it for training. The flip side is that the area open at any one time can be limited, and pistes are carefully marked because crevasses exist outside them.

The glacier areas reached from Geneva

Zermatt has the highest and largest glacier ski terrain of the group, beneath the Matterhorn and linked to Cervinia on the Italian side. Because it is high, it offers skiing for much of the year, and its glacier sector is used for summer training. Saas-Fee, another car-free village in the Valais, skis on glaciers above the village and is known for an extended season and for hosting training camps. In France, Tignes has a glacier on the Grande Motte that extends its season well beyond that of lower resorts, and it shares its wider ski area with Val d'Isère. Les Deux Alpes, further south in the Isère, has a large glacier above the resort that has long been known for summer skiing. Opening periods change from year to year according to snow and conditions, so always check each resort's own announcements.

Conditions and what to pack

Even on a warm day in the valley, the top of a glacier can be cold and windy, and weather can turn quickly at altitude. Bring warm layers, a windproof shell, gloves and a hat as well as strong sunscreen and high-category sunglasses or goggles: the combination of altitude and reflective ice makes the sun very intense. The thin air means you may tire more quickly and feel short of breath at first, so take it easy on the first runs and drink plenty of water. Visibility can drop fast in cloud, when glacier slopes become featureless, and lifts may close in strong wind. Having a flexible plan, with an alternative activity in the valley, makes a glacier trip more relaxing.

Safety on the ice

Glaciers carry hidden crevasses, some covered by thin snow bridges, which is why ski areas mark and secure their pistes carefully. Stay inside the marked boundaries unless you are with a qualified mountain guide equipped for glacier travel. Ski touring and off-piste on glaciers require rope, rescue equipment and the knowledge to use it. Within the pistes, glacier skiing is no more dangerous than ordinary resort skiing, and patrols are present. Families and less experienced skiers will find the open, gentle slopes reassuring, but children feel the cold and altitude too, so plan short sessions with breaks.

Combining a glacier trip with Geneva

Because glacier skiing often takes place outside the main winter season, it can be combined with other activities: hiking, mountain biking or lake swimming in summer, or a city break in Geneva or Lausanne in autumn. Zermatt and Saas-Fee are both car-free, so road transfers stop at the edge of the village and you continue by train or local shuttle. Tignes and Les Deux Alpes are reached by mountain roads that are usually clear outside winter but can see snow at altitude in late autumn.

Travelling there with a private chauffeur

When you book with AirportsTransfers.ch, the fixed price per vehicle appears before you pay online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your driver tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name sign and includes waiting time if you land late. Skis and boards should be declared at booking so the right car comes: the Mercedes V-Class takes up to seven passengers and their equipment, and a Sprinter minibus is available for training groups and clubs. Child seats can be requested. Questions are answered on +41 78 346 56 77 by phone or WhatsApp, and return trips can be booked at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Which glacier ski areas can I reach from Geneva?
Zermatt and Saas-Fee in the Valais, and Tignes and Les Deux Alpes in the French Alps, are the glacier areas most often reached from Geneva Airport by road.
Is glacier skiing suitable for intermediate skiers?
Generally yes. Glacier pistes tend to be wide and open, but altitude, cold and quick weather changes make it important to stay on marked pistes and dress warmly.
Can a car drive right into Zermatt or Saas-Fee?
No, both villages are car-free. For Zermatt, transfers stop at Täsch, about 2 h 35 from Geneva Airport, where a shuttle train continues to the village; Saas-Fee has car parks at the village entrance.
