Alpine resorts for a summer holiday: families and couples compared

Which Alpine resorts near Geneva work well in summer, and how Zermatt, Chamonix, Crans-Montana, Megève, Gstaad and others suit families or couples.

Several Alpine resorts within easy reach of Geneva Airport are as rewarding in summer as in winter, but they suit different travellers: Megève and Crans-Montana are gentle and family-friendly, Zermatt and Chamonix are dramatic high-mountain bases, and Gstaad is a quiet retreat for couples. All are reached by road from GVA in 1 to 3 hours, and AirportsTransfers.ch drives you there door to door.

  • Easiest for young children: Megève, Crans-Montana, Annecy
  • High mountain scenery: Zermatt, Chamonix, Courmayeur
  • Quiet and green: Gstaad and the Saanenland
  • Sporty and lively: Verbier, Chamonix
  • Closest to GVA: Annecy 44 km, Megève 75 km, Chamonix 90 km

What makes a resort good in summer

A ski resort is not automatically a summer resort. What matters in July and August is a working lift network that runs in summer, a village with life of its own rather than shuttered apartment blocks, a range of walks from flat to challenging, water to cool off in, and things to do on a rainy afternoon. Families look for short walks with a reward at the end, such as a lake, a playground or a farm; couples tend to value good restaurants, spas and views. The resorts below each tick a different combination of boxes.

Family favourites: Megève, Crans-Montana and Annecy

Megève, 75 km and about 1 h 10 from GVA, is a traditional village with a pedestrian centre, horse-drawn carriages and pastoral slopes rather than sheer cliffs. Gentle walking paths, summer lifts, a golf course and outdoor swimming make it easy with small children, and Mont Blanc views appear from many terraces. The ride is short enough that young children rarely tire of it.

Crans-Montana, about 190 km and 2 h 15 away in Valais, sits on a sunny plateau scattered with small lakes, some with paddle boats and lakeside paths that are ideal for pushchairs. The resort is known for its championship golf course and wide panorama of the Valais Alps across the Rhône valley. Annecy, at 44 km and 40 minutes, is not a mountain resort but works brilliantly for families: lake beaches, cycle paths along the shore, boat trips and an old town of canals, with the mountains rising straight from the water.

High-mountain drama: Zermatt, Chamonix and Courmayeur

For couples and active families who want big peaks, Zermatt and Chamonix are the obvious choices. Zermatt is car-free and dominated by the Matterhorn; trains and lifts climb to viewpoints such as the Gornergrat and the Matterhorn glacier area, and walks lead past lakes that mirror the mountain. Transfers end in Täsch, 231 km and around 2 h 35 from GVA, where a shuttle train takes you up the last few kilometres. Chamonix, only 90 km and about 1 h 15 away, has the Aiguille du Midi cable car, the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace and an endless network of trails. It is livelier and sportier, with climbers, runners and paragliders everywhere.

Through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Courmayeur, 107 km and about 1 h 30 from Geneva, gives the same massif an Italian accent: sunny terraces, Aosta Valley cooking and the Skyway cable car rising to the Helbronner viewpoint. Couples often combine a few days in Chamonix with a few in Courmayeur.

Couples' retreats and sporty bases: Gstaad, Verbier and St. Moritz

Gstaad, about 160 km and 2 h from GVA, is green, low-key and elegant, with a car-free promenade, chalet hotels and gentle valleys perfect for long walks, e-bike tours and picnics. It suits couples looking for calm rather than adrenaline. Verbier, also around 160 km and 2 h away, is the opposite: a high, south-facing balcony with a bike park, demanding hikes and a busy summer calendar of music and sport. St. Moritz, around 400 km and 5 h by road, is a longer journey but rewards with the lakes of the Engadin, crisp light and sailing and kitesurfing on the water.

  • Gstaad: tranquil, green, couples and walkers
  • Verbier: high, sporty, bike park and big hikes
  • St. Moritz: lakes, light and a longer stay

How to choose and plan the trip

Start with travel time. With children under five, a resort within about an hour and a half, such as Megève, Chamonix or Annecy, keeps arrival day relaxed. Older children and adults usually cope happily with the two-hour drives to Verbier, Gstaad or Crans-Montana, especially with a comfortable stop on the way. Next, think about altitude: higher resorts are cooler during heatwaves but can be chilly in the evenings, while lower villages are warmer and greener. Finally, check summer lift dates, which usually span late June to early September.

Combining two resorts in one holiday works well: Chamonix and Courmayeur, Zermatt and Crans-Montana, or Annecy and Megève. A chauffeur can move you between them in a morning, so you spend the time in the mountains rather than on trains with luggage.

Book your resort transfer

Every booking with AirportsTransfers.ch shows a fixed price per vehicle up front, paid online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your chauffeur meets you at arrivals holding a name sign, monitors the flight and waits if you are delayed. Families can request child seats, and a V-Class van carries up to seven passengers with ten bags, while a Sprinter minibus handles bigger groups. Transfers between resorts and return journeys to GVA can be added in the same booking. Questions? Call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77, day or night.
