Geneva's own vineyards begin only a short drive from Geneva Airport, mostly in the Mandement area west of the city, around Satigny, Dardagny and Russin. Few visitors realise that the canton is a significant wine region, with family estates, open cellars and a wide range of grapes, and AirportsTransfers.ch can take you from your flight or hotel straight into the vines for an afternoon of tastings.

A wine canton on the city's doorstep
Despite its image as an international city of diplomacy and finance, Geneva is surrounded by countryside, and much of it is planted with vines. The canton is one of Switzerland's main wine-producing areas, with vineyards spread across three regions: the Mandement, on the right bank of the Rhône to the west; the area between the Arve and the Rhône, to the south-west; and the area between the Arve and the lake, to the east. The Mandement is the largest and the most visited. The landscape is open and gentle, with rolling hills, hamlets of stone houses and views towards the Jura and the Salève. Because it is so close to the airport and the city centre, it is ideal for a short escape between meetings or before a flight.
The Mandement villages
Satigny is the heart of the Mandement and is often cited as the largest wine-growing commune in Switzerland. It includes several hamlets, such as Peissy, Bourdigny and Choully, each with family estates and cellars. Further west, Dardagny is a small village with a castle and old farmhouses, set among vineyards that slope towards the Allondon river and the Rhône. Russin, on a terrace above the Rhône, is known for its harvest festival in autumn, and the nature reserves along the river make pleasant walks between tastings. The atmosphere is rural and unpretentious, with winegrowers often receiving visitors themselves. Many estates combine wine with other local products, and a stop in a village café for a plate of local charcuterie is part of the experience.
The grapes of Geneva
Geneva grows a broad range of varieties. Chasselas remains important for white wines, alongside Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Aligoté, the latter being a traditional grape in Geneva. Gamay is the most widely planted red, giving fresh, fruity wines well suited to everyday drinking. Pinot Noir is also common, and Gamaret and Garanoir, two crossings developed in Switzerland, produce deeper, spicier reds that do well in Geneva's climate. Many estates also make Merlot, Syrah or sparkling wines, and the canton has worked to promote quality with its own appellation and premier cru designations. A tasting here often reveals a surprising diversity, with each producer working with a wide palette of grapes on relatively small plots.
Open cellars and wine events
Geneva has a strong open-cellar culture. Each year, usually in spring, a weekend of open cellars sees many estates across the canton welcome the public for tastings, with a relaxed, festive atmosphere and visitors moving from village to village. In autumn, harvest festivals such as the one in Russin celebrate the end of the grape harvest with music, local food and new wine. Outside these events, many producers welcome visitors by appointment or during regular opening times in their shops. Because the villages are scattered, and tastings involve several stops, a driver is especially useful on open-cellar days, when parking is busy and roads are full of visitors. Check the event dates for the year before planning your trip, as they change from one year to the next and some estates require advance registration for groups.
