Geneva to Nice via Turin and the Col de Tende region

A road route from Geneva through the Mont Blanc tunnel and across Piedmont, via Turin and Cuneo, down to Nice and the Mediterranean coast.

The route from Geneva Airport to Nice via Turin crosses the Alps through the Mont Blanc tunnel, follows the Aosta Valley to Turin, about 256 km and 3 h 10 from GVA, then runs south through Piedmont towards the Mediterranean. With an overnight in Turin and possibly another near Cuneo, it turns a long transfer into a two- or three-day Alpine and Riviera journey. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive the whole trip or just the first leg to Turin.

  • First stage: Turin about 256 km, 3 h 10 from GVA via the Mont Blanc tunnel
  • Border crossings: the route crosses the border into France, then Italy, then France again
  • Ideal length: two to three days with stopovers
  • Highlights: Aosta Valley castles, Turin, the Langhe hills, Cuneo, the Roya valley or Ligurian coast, Nice
  • Best for: travellers heading to the Riviera who want to see Piedmont on the way

Stage one: Mont Blanc and the Aosta Valley

From Geneva Airport, the motorway heads south-east to Chamonix, about 90 km away, and enters the Mont Blanc tunnel, which runs under the massif into Italy. On the other side, Courmayeur, about 107 km from GVA, sits at the head of the Aosta Valley. The valley descends past a remarkable series of medieval castles perched on rocky spurs, such as Fénis with its towers and battlements, and the town of Aosta, with Roman walls, a theatre façade and the Arch of Augustus. Fontina cheese comes from the valley's pastures, and its wines are grown on some of the highest vineyards in Europe.

Stage two: Turin, the elegant capital of Piedmont

Turin was the first capital of unified Italy and the seat of the House of Savoy, whose royal residences form a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is laid out with long arcaded streets and grand squares such as Piazza San Carlo and Piazza Castello, overlooked by the Royal Palace. Its landmark is the Mole Antonelliana, a tall spired building that houses the National Museum of Cinema, with a lift to a panoramic terrace. The Egyptian Museum holds one of the most important collections of its kind outside Cairo. Turin is the home of the aperitivo culture, of vermouth and of gianduja, the chocolate and hazelnut blend, best tasted in a bicerin, a layered drink of coffee, chocolate and cream served in the historic cafés.

Stage three: through southern Piedmont

Heading south, the road crosses the plain towards Cuneo, a town of arcades at the meeting of two rivers, with the Maritime Alps rising behind. To the east lie the Langhe hills, famous for Barolo and Barbaresco wines and white truffles from around Alba, a worthwhile detour for food lovers. From Cuneo, the direct route to Nice climbs to the Col de Tende area and descends through the Roya valley in France. The Tende road tunnel and the valley roads have seen long closures and reconstruction works after severe storm damage, so the status needs checking close to your travel date. The reliable alternative is the motorway towards Savona and along the Ligurian coast through Sanremo and Ventimiglia, crossing back into France at Menton.

Where to sleep on the way is mostly a question of taste. Turin itself gives the most to do in an evening, with its aperitivo bars and grand cafés, but a night in the Langhe, in a wine village such as Barolo or La Morra, offers vineyard views and slow dinners built around local produce. Cuneo is a practical last stop before the mountains, close enough to the Tende area or the coastal motorway to reach Nice by lunchtime. In autumn, the truffle season around Alba makes the Langhe detour especially tempting, though hotels fill quickly, so book early.

Arrival on the Riviera

Whichever way you arrive, Nice greets you with the curve of the Baie des Anges and the Promenade des Anglais. The old town, Vieux Nice, has narrow lanes, Baroque churches and the Cours Saleya flower and food market, while Castle Hill offers views over the port and the bay. The Matisse and Chagall museums sit on the hill of Cimiez. Local dishes include socca, a chickpea pancake, salade niçoise and pissaladière. From Nice, Villefranche, Èze and Monaco are a short drive along the corniches.

  • The Mont Blanc tunnel occasionally has maintenance closures; your chauffeur will plan accordingly.
  • French and Italian motorways are tolled.
  • Carry identity documents for the several border crossings.
