Geneva to Verona and Lake Garda: arena, lemon houses and lakeside towns

A road itinerary from Geneva through the Alps to Verona's Roman arena and the lakeside towns of Lake Garda, with Valpolicella vineyards in between.

Verona and Lake Garda lie east of Milan, which is itself about 329 km and 3 h 50 by road from Geneva Airport, so the journey is a long but scenic day through the Alps and across the Lombardy plain. A four- to six-day trip lets you combine Verona's Roman arena and medieval squares with Garda's lakeside towns. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you all the way from the GVA terminal to your hotel on the lake or in the city.

  • Route: through the Alps via the Mont Blanc tunnel or the Simplon, then east past Milan
  • Reference distance: Milan about 329 km, 3 h 50 from GVA; Verona and Garda further east
  • Border crossing: the route crosses the border into Italy (and into France first if going via Mont Blanc)
  • Ideal length: four to six days
  • Highlights: Verona Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, Sirmione, Malcesine and Monte Baldo, Limone, Valpolicella

The drive: crossing the Alps into Italy

There are two classic ways to reach northern Italy from Geneva. The first goes via Chamonix and the Mont Blanc tunnel into the Aosta Valley, then down past Turin's outskirts towards Milan. The second follows Lake Geneva to the Valais and crosses the Simplon Pass, descending to Domodossola and Lake Maggiore. Both join the busy motorway east across Lombardy towards Brescia, where you choose between Garda's southern shore and Verona just beyond. A stop at Lake Maggiore or in Milan for lunch makes the day far more pleasant; with a chauffeur, you can simply choose on the day.

Verona: Roman arena and medieval squares

Verona's historic centre, enclosed in a bend of the Adige river, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Arena, a remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheatre on Piazza Bra, still hosts a celebrated open-air opera season in summer, when audiences sit on the ancient stone tiers. A short walk away, Piazza delle Erbe occupies the site of the Roman forum and is surrounded by frescoed façades, while the adjoining Piazza dei Signori is quieter and more formal. The courtyard known as Juliet's House, with its famous balcony, draws crowds thanks to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. For a calmer visit, cross the Ponte Pietra to climb towards Castel San Pietro for a view over the rooftops, or explore Castelvecchio, the brick fortress with its fortified bridge over the river.

Lake Garda: three shores, three moods

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, and its character changes from south to north. The southern shore is broad and gentle, with Sirmione on a narrow peninsula guarded by the moated Scaliger castle; at its tip, the remains of a large Roman villa known as the Grotte di Catullo overlook the water. The eastern shore holds Bardolino, known for its light red wine, and Garda town, then Malcesine, where a rotating cable car climbs Monte Baldo for a view along the whole lake. The northern end narrows between steep mountains, and Riva del Garda and Torbole are favourites with windsurfers and sailors thanks to reliable winds. On the western side, Limone sul Garda is known for its historic lemon houses, terraced structures once used to grow citrus this far north.

Valpolicella and the food of the region

Between Verona and the lake, the hills of Valpolicella produce several well-known red wines, including Amarone, made from partly dried grapes, and the lighter Valpolicella itself. Soave, a white, comes from hills east of the city. Local cooking includes risotto with Amarone, fresh lake fish, polenta and pandoro, the star-shaped Christmas cake that originated in Verona. Garda's eastern shore also produces olive oil from groves that thrive in the mild lake climate. A chauffeured afternoon among the wineries removes any concern about tastings.

Suggested plan

Day one: transfer from Geneva Airport to Lake Garda, with a lunch stop at Lake Maggiore or in Milan. Days two and three: Sirmione by boat, Malcesine and Monte Baldo, Limone on the western shore. Day four: Verona, with the Arena, Piazza delle Erbe and an evening opera if the season allows. Day five: Valpolicella tastings, then either a night in Verona or the drive back to Geneva.

  • Lake roads, especially on the western shore, are narrow with many tunnels; summer traffic is heavy.
  • Ferries connect most lakeside towns and are a relaxing alternative to driving.
  • Italian motorways are tolled; your chauffeur takes care of this.
