Why take the Mont Blanc route
Many travellers fly into Geneva and out of Milan, or are heading on to the Italian lakes or the Riviera after a stay in Switzerland. Instead of a straight motorway transfer, the route via the Mont Blanc Tunnel lets you see the mountain from both sides in a single day. It also avoids the hassle of trains with changes and heavy luggage: the bags stay in the car while you explore, and you arrive at your Milan hotel or airport without carrying anything further than the kerb.
Chamonix: the French side of Mont Blanc
Chamonix is about 90 km from Geneva Airport, around 1 h 15, which makes it a natural first stop after breakfast. The town sits at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs to a viewing terrace high among the glaciers, with a close view of the summit on clear days. If time or weather is short, a walk through the town centre, along the Arve river and past the statue of the first climbers of Mont Blanc, still gives a strong sense of the place. Mornings are usually the clearest time for views, so an early start pays off.
Through the tunnel to Courmayeur
From Chamonix, the road climbs to the Mont Blanc Tunnel, which runs for more than 11 km beneath the massif and brings you out in Italy's Aosta Valley. Courmayeur, the first resort on the Italian side, lies about 107 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 1 h 30 on the direct route. Its pedestrian main street is lined with cafés, and the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car rises from just outside the village to Punta Helbronner, facing the southern walls of the mountain. It is easy to compare the two sides: from Italy, Mont Blanc appears steeper and more rugged.
Courmayeur is also a good lunch stop. Aosta Valley cooking is hearty and Alpine, with fontina cheese, polenta, cured meats and dishes such as fonduta, and it marks the first taste of Italy on the trip.
Aosta and the Fort of Bard
Half an hour down the valley, Aosta was founded by the Romans and still shows it. The Arch of Augustus, the Porta Praetoria gateway and the tall façade of the Roman theatre stand in the middle of the modern town, and the medieval collegiate church of Sant'Orso adds a Romanesque cloister. An hour's walk is enough to see the highlights.
Further down the valley, the castles multiply: Fénis, with its turrets and frescoes, is one of the most photogenic, and the massive Fort of Bard, rebuilt in the nineteenth century on a rocky spur, closes the valley like a gate. It now houses museums, and simply driving past gives a striking view. From there, the valley widens towards Ivrea and the plain, and the motorway leads on to Milan.
Arriving in Milan
The final stretch across the Po plain is straightforward, but Milan traffic can be dense at the end of the working day, so plan a margin if you have a flight from Malpensa or Linate, or a dinner booking in the city. If you are staying in Milan, hotels near the Duomo, Brera or the Porta Nuova district are common drop-off points.
- Leave Geneva by 8 am to make the most of the light in Chamonix and Aosta.
- In winter, the route is open, but snow can slow traffic in the valleys; your chauffeur will adjust the timing.
- For a flight from Milan, aim to reach the airport at least two hours before departure.
- Carry identity documents, as the route passes through France and Italy.
