The direct road from Geneva Airport to Lyon covers about 150 km and takes around 1 h 45, but with a few hours to spare you can turn it into a scenic day by going via Annecy, 44 km and about 40 minutes from the airport. Add a stop by Lac du Bourget or in medieval Pérouges and you reach Lyon or its airport in the evening having seen some of the prettiest corners of Savoie and the Ain. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive the route with stops built in.

Why make the detour?
Many travellers need to get from Geneva to Lyon: they flew into one airport and out of the other, found a cheaper flight from Lyon Saint-Exupéry, or are simply moving on to a Lyon hotel. The direct motorway is efficient but not memorable. Going via Annecy and the lakes of Savoie adds relatively little distance while transforming the journey. Instead of a transfer, you get a day trip that happens to end at your next destination, with your luggage safely in the boot all day.
The route also suits those who like to choose the pace. Couples travelling light can do it comfortably in a Business Sedan, while a family with several suitcases, or a small group sharing the cost, will be more at ease in a Mercedes V-Class Van. Because the price is per vehicle rather than per seat, sharing the car between several people keeps the day reasonable, and nobody has to drag bags between trains and buses at each stop.
Morning in Annecy
Leave Geneva after breakfast and you can be strolling through Annecy's old town within the hour. The canals of the Thiou, the island-shaped Palais de l'Isle and the flower-decked bridges are best seen before midday crowds. Walk along the lakeside gardens to the Pont des Amours and look out over some of the clearest water in Europe, ringed by mountains. If time allows, a short drive along the western shore to Sévrier or the eastern shore to Talloires gives wider views of the lake.
Annecy is also a good place for an early lunch. Savoyard specialities such as reblochon, tartiflette and lake fish appear on many menus, and the old town's market streets are lively on market days.
Aix-les-Bains and Lac du Bourget
From Annecy, the road south leads to Aix-les-Bains, a historic spa town on the shore of Lac du Bourget, the largest natural lake entirely within France. Its lakeside promenade and the views across to the Dent du Chat ridge make a pleasant afternoon stretch. On the far shore, Hautecombe Abbey, burial place of members of the House of Savoy, is visible from the water and can be reached by boat or road.
Nearby Chambéry, the old capital of the Dukes of Savoy, has an attractive historic centre with its château and the Fountain of the Elephants. You can choose one of these stops or combine them if you started early.
Pérouges, the last stop before Lyon
From Chambéry, the motorway heads west towards Lyon. Just north-east of Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport lies Pérouges, a remarkably preserved medieval hilltop village of cobbled lanes, stone houses and a central square shaded by a lime tree. It is often used as a film set and is known for its sugary galette, a local flat cake. Because it is only a short drive from the airport, it fits well before an evening flight, or as a final pause before continuing into the city.
Timing your day and your flight
- If you are flying from Lyon, plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure; work backwards from that.
- Leave Geneva early in summer to beat traffic around Annecy, which can be heavy at weekends.
- Lunch in Annecy and a late-afternoon stop in Pérouges makes a balanced, unhurried day.
- If you are continuing into Lyon city, the old quarter, Vieux Lyon, is an easy drop-off point.
Booking a one-way transfer with stops
When you book, mention the stops you would like so the quote and timing reflect the day; alternatively, reserve a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) for full flexibility. AirportsTransfers.ch shows a fixed price per vehicle before payment, and you can pay securely online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. If you are landing in Geneva first, your driver will be in arrivals with a name sign and will track your flight, waiting if it is late. Child seats are available on request, and skis or other large items should be declared at booking. For help planning the route, call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77.
