Arriving passengers at Geneva Airport can take a free ticket for Geneva's public transport from a machine in the baggage reclaim area, valid for a limited time for travel into the city. It is ideal for light-luggage trips into town, but it does not cover longer journeys to the lake resorts or the Alps, which is where a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch takes over.
- Where to get it: Ticket machine in the baggage reclaim area
- Who it is for: Arriving passengers heading into Geneva
- Validity: A limited period, for local public transport
- Covers: Trains, trams and buses within the local network
- Does not cover: Long-distance trips to resorts or other cities
How the free ticket works
Geneva Airport offers arriving passengers a free ticket for the city's public transport, available from a dedicated machine in the baggage reclaim hall. You take it before passing through customs, and it is valid for a limited time from issue for travel on trains, trams and buses within the local Geneva network.
It is a thoughtful welcome and a practical one. Trains from the airport station reach Cornavin, the main station in the city centre, in a few minutes, and buses serve many neighbourhoods. For a business traveller with a cabin bag or a couple staying in a central hotel, the ticket can cover the whole trip from aircraft to lobby.
Remember to take it before you leave the baggage reclaim area. Once you have passed through customs into the public arrivals hall, you can no longer reach the machine, and you would need to buy a ticket at the station instead.
Its limits
The ticket is designed for local travel. It covers the trip into Geneva and nearby areas within the network, not intercity trains to Lausanne, Montreux or beyond, and certainly not the mountain resorts. Lausanne is about 61 km and 45 minutes by road, Montreux roughly 91 km and 1 h 05, and resorts like Verbier or Gstaad around 160 km and 2 hours: all outside its scope.
Because the ticket is valid only for a limited time, it is meant for an immediate journey rather than a day of sightseeing. If you plan to explore further, buy the appropriate ticket or pass, or check whether your accommodation provides the Geneva Transport Card, which is offered to guests at many hotels and hostels for the duration of their stay.
- Take the ticket in baggage reclaim, before customs
- Use it straight away for your trip into the city
- It does not cover intercity trains or resort transfers
- Ask your hotel about the Geneva Transport Card
- Keep it with you in case of inspection
When public transport is the right choice
If you are travelling light, staying in central Geneva and arriving during the day, the free ticket and public transport are hard to beat. Trains are frequent and comfortable, trams reach most of the city, and you can be at your hotel quickly.
Even for families, a short trip into town by train can be manageable with a couple of suitcases and a little patience at the station.
Check the route from the nearest stop to your accommodation before you set off. Some areas of Geneva are hilly, and a hotel that is a short walk from a tram stop on a map can feel much further with heavy cases. If your accommodation is in a quieter residential area or a neighbouring commune, look at how many changes the trip involves.
When a private transfer makes more sense
The case for a car grows with distance, luggage and timing. Ski holidays involve skis, boots and bags that are awkward on trams and trains. Mountain destinations often mean several changes and a final bus or funicular. Late-night and very early flights may fall outside convenient public transport hours. Groups and families find that the fixed price of a vehicle, divided between them, is often reasonable. Travellers with reduced mobility, or simply tired after a long-haul flight, may also prefer a car that waits for them in the arrivals hall and drops them at the door.
Destinations across the border, such as Chamonix at about 90 km and 1 h 15 or Annecy at around 44 km and 40 minutes, add a further reason to book a car that takes you door to door.
Booking a private transfer from Geneva Airport
AirportsTransfers.ch shows you the fixed price per vehicle before you pay securely online by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your chauffeur meets you in arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight and waits if it is delayed. Child seats are available on request, and skis or snowboards should be declared at booking so the vehicle has room.
