Private transfer vs shared shuttle: what's the difference?

Shared shuttles look cheaper per seat, private transfers leave when you do. Waiting time, drop-offs, flexibility and group value compared.

A shared shuttle groups passengers from different flights into one vehicle with fixed departure times and several drop-offs, while a private transfer takes only your party directly to your door, leaving when you are ready. Solo travellers on a budget often choose a shuttle; families and groups frequently find a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch better value per person and far less waiting.

  • Shared shuttle: Per-seat price, fixed times, several stops
  • Private transfer: Price per vehicle, departs when you land, direct
  • Waiting: Shuttles may wait for other flights to land
  • Groups of 4+: Private often compares well per person
  • Flexibility: Private allows stops, child seats and changes

How a shared shuttle works

Shared shuttles collect passengers from several flights landing within a time window and drive them together to a resort or region. Departure times are scheduled, so if your flight lands early you wait, and if it lands late you may be moved to a later departure. Once on the road, the shuttle stops at each passenger's accommodation in turn.

For a solo traveller with one bag going to a large resort on a quiet weekday, this can work perfectly well. The price per seat is usually lower than a private car carrying one person, and the trip is predictable.

Shuttles also suit travellers who are relaxed about timing: a student on a ski season, a solo traveller with a flexible schedule, or anyone happy to read a book at the airport while the vehicle fills. The key is to know what you are buying. The lower price per seat is paid for partly in time and partly in flexibility.

Waiting and multiple drop-offs

The hidden cost of a shuttle is time. Waiting at the airport for other passengers can add an hour or more on busy days, especially on Saturdays in winter when many flights land at once. Then come the drop-offs: in a spread-out resort or a valley with several villages, the last passenger can spend a long time watching others get out.

On a route such as Geneva to Verbier, about 160 km and 2 hours direct, or to Courchevel, roughly 150 km and 2 h 15, those extra minutes add up. With tired children or after a long-haul flight, they feel even longer.

The order of drop-offs is usually decided by geography, not by who has waited longest. If your accommodation is at the far end of a resort or in a higher village, you may be among the last to arrive. On the return trip the logic reverses, and early pick-ups for passengers spread across a resort can mean a very early start for those collected first.

Flexibility you only get privately

A private transfer is built around one party. Your chauffeur tracks your flight, waits in arrivals with a name sign and leaves as soon as you have your bags. You can ask for a stop at a supermarket or a ski hire shop, a break for children, or a detour to collect keys. Child seats are fitted in advance, and the vehicle is sized for your luggage and skis.

If your flight is delayed, a private transfer follows your new arrival time, with waiting included. With a shuttle, a delay can mean missing the scheduled departure and waiting for the next one.

  • Departs when you are ready, not on a timetable
  • Direct to your door, no other drop-offs
  • Stops on request, such as shops or ski hire
  • Child seats prepared before you arrive
  • Follows your flight if it is late

Comparing value for families and groups

Shuttles charge per seat, while private transfers charge per vehicle. That makes a big difference for groups. Once you are four or more people, the total of individual shuttle seats can approach or exceed the fixed price of a private van, particularly for nearer destinations such as Megève, about 75 km and 1 h 10, or Chamonix, around 90 km and 1 h 15.

A Mercedes V-Class van carries up to seven passengers and ten bags, and a Mercedes Sprinter minibus suits larger groups. Splitting the fixed vehicle price between everyone often shows that private is not the luxury option it appears to be. Work out the numbers for your party before deciding.

Remember to include the return journey in the comparison. A private transfer back to the airport collects you at a time that suits your flight, whereas a shuttle collects passengers for several flights at once, sometimes leaving you at the terminal far earlier than needed. For families travelling with children, those spare hours at the airport are rarely restful.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a shared shuttle take longer?
It may wait for passengers from other flights and then stop at several accommodations, which adds time compared with a direct private transfer.
Is a private transfer more expensive than a shuttle?
For one person, usually yes. For families and groups, the fixed price per vehicle split between everyone often compares well with several shuttle seats.
What happens if my flight is late?
A private transfer tracks your flight and waits, with waiting included. A shuttle may move you to a later departure.
