Thonon-les-Bains
Thonon-les-Bains is about 35 km from Geneva Airport, roughly 40 minutes by road, on the French south shore of Lake Geneva. The Léman Express runs from Geneva Cornavin to Thonon, so the train works with one change, while a private transfer with AirportsTransfers.ch is simpler with luggage, children, groups or onward journeys into the Chablais mountains.

Thonon-les-Bains on the French shore
Thonon-les-Bains is the main town of the Chablais, in Haute-Savoie, set on a terrace above Lake Geneva. Its upper town has shops, squares and a belvedere looking across the water to the Swiss shore, while a small funicular links it with the port of Rives below, where fishing boats and lake ferries tie up. Thonon is known as a spa town for its mineral water, and nearby sights include the Château de Ripaille with its vineyards and forest on the lakeshore. Inland, the Dranse valleys lead up to the mountain resorts of the Chablais, part of the large Portes du Soleil ski area.
The Léman Express route
The Léman Express links Geneva with Annemasse and continues along the south shore of the lake to Thonon and Évian. From the airport, you take a train to Geneva Cornavin and change onto the Léman Express towards Évian, stepping off at Thonon. One change, frequent services during the day, and a comfortable journey that passes through Geneva in a tunnel before crossing into France. Arriving passengers can usually collect a free public transport ticket in the baggage reclaim area for the Geneva zone, but the French section may need its own ticket.
Thonon can also be reached by boat across the lake from Lausanne, a pleasant crossing in its own right. It is not a practical route from Geneva Airport, though, as it would mean travelling to Lausanne first. For airport arrivals, the realistic choices are the train via Cornavin or a car along the south shore.
For a single traveller staying near Thonon station, this is a good option. With heavy luggage, the change at Cornavin and the walk at the far end take more effort.
By road along the south shore
By car, your chauffeur crosses or bypasses Geneva and follows the roads along the south shore of the lake through the Genevois and the Bas-Chablais to Thonon. The trip takes about 40 minutes in normal traffic and ends at your exact address: a hotel near the port, a holiday flat in the upper town, a house in Anthy or Margencel, or a villa above the lake. A Mercedes E-Class carries three passengers and three bags, and a Mercedes V-Class up to seven passengers and ten bags. Child seats are available on request.
Onward to the Chablais mountains
In winter, many travellers heading through Thonon are bound for the ski resorts of the Chablais and the Portes du Soleil. There, the car has a real advantage: the transfer can continue up the Dranse valleys to your chalet, with skis loaded once at the airport. Declare skis and snowboards at booking so the right vehicle is assigned, and note that mountain roads can be snowy; vehicles run on winter tyres and carry chains when needed. In summer, visitors heading for the lakeside beaches or walking in the hills benefit from the same flexibility.
Spa visitors and holidaymakers in Évian, a short way further east along the shore, often use the same transfer, and the chauffeur can drop part of a group in Thonon and continue with the rest. Mention every address when booking so the route and vehicle size can be planned.
Groups, traffic and unsocial hours
Groups and families gain most from a fixed price per vehicle, which is shared among passengers; a Mercedes Sprinter minibus moves larger parties together. Commuter traffic into and out of Geneva can slow the border crossings at peak times, so allow extra time for evening arrivals and morning departures on weekdays. Late at night, trains run less often and a wait at Cornavin with luggage is unappealing, whereas a car takes the same forty minutes. Your chauffeur tracks your flight and waits if you land late, and can collect you at dawn for an early departure.
If you travel light and land in the middle of the day, the Léman Express is an easy and economical way to reach Thonon. The car is the better fit with luggage, children, skis and awkward flight times.
