The road from Geneva Airport
The drive crosses Geneva and enters France on the east side of the canton, then follows the lakeside road through the Chablais, passing Thonon-les-Bains before reaching Évian. It is not a motorway journey, so the time depends on traffic through the towns; summer weekends and the evening commute are the slowest periods. The scenery makes up for it, with glimpses of the lake and the Swiss shore on your left for much of the way.
Rail is possible on the regional line along the south shore, usually with a change, and from the Swiss side the ferry from Lausanne-Ouchy is a pleasant crossing. For travellers with luggage, golf bags or an early check-in time at a spa hotel, a direct car avoids juggling trains, boats and taxis.
Spa heritage and the town centre
Évian grew in the nineteenth century around its springs, and the water is still the town's best-known export. In the centre you can visit the public Cachat spring, where locals fill bottles, and walk past the grand buildings of the spa era. The former thermal establishment, the Palais Lumière, is now a cultural centre hosting exhibitions, while the ornate wooden buvette (pump room) and the old casino give a sense of the town's glamorous past. The promenade along the lake, lined with gardens and plane trees, is the place for an evening stroll.
Above the centre, a small funicular climbs the hillside and gives good views across the water. Food here is a mix of lake fish such as perch and féra, Savoyard dishes from the nearby mountains, and the wines of the Chablais.
Where to stay and who comes here
Accommodation ranges from historic spa hotels on the slopes to simpler hotels and apartments near the lakeshore. Many guests come for wellness and treatments, others for the golf course above the town, which hosts a major international women's tournament, and others for conferences, as Évian has a long tradition of hosting meetings and summits. For business groups the convenience of GVA, under an hour away, is a key argument: delegates can be moved in a few minibuses rather than relying on public transport across a border.
If you plan to stay for several days, the town also works as a base for exploring the Swiss side of the lake by boat, which saves driving all the way round.
Day trips along the Chablais
The medieval village of Yvoire, with its flower-filled lanes and castle on the water, is one of the most visited spots on the south shore. Thonon-les-Bains, a larger town next door, has a lakeside port reached by a funicular and the Château de Ripaille set in vineyards and forest. Inland, the Abondance valley is known for its cheese and abbey, and the ski areas of the Portes du Soleil are within reach in winter. Across the lake, Lausanne and the Lavaux vineyards make an easy boat excursion.
For walkers, the hills behind Évian rise quickly to a plateau of pastures and forests with views over the whole lake, and the Dents d'Oche, a distinctive limestone peak, is a popular summer hike for experienced walkers. The protected Dranse delta between Thonon and Évian is home to many birds and has easy trails. Because buses between these spots are infrequent, a driver for a few hours, booked by the hour with a two-hour minimum, saves a lot of planning on a short stay.
