Friedrichshafen
Friedrichshafen is 407 km from Geneva Airport, a drive of around 4 hours 20 minutes across Switzerland and into Germany on the northern shore of Lake Constance. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive you directly from arrivals to your hotel or the exhibition grounds, a useful option during trade fairs when trains and local transport are crowded.
- Distance from GVA: 407 km by road
- Drive time: about 4 h 20
- Border crossing: the route crosses the border into Germany
- Best for: trade fairs, aviation history, lake holidays
- Getting there: motorway via Bern and Zurich, then towards Lake Constance
The journey from Geneva Airport
The road follows the Swiss motorway network via Lausanne, Bern and Zurich, then continues north-east towards Lake Constance and crosses into Germany. Depending on traffic, the chauffeur may go around the lake via Konstanz or along its western end, or approach through the Swiss shore. Rush hour around Zurich is the main variable, so a mid-morning or evening departure is often smoother.
Rail travellers usually need several changes, for example via Zurich and a lake ferry or a train around the lake. It is a scenic trip but not a quick one. If you carry exhibition material or travel with colleagues, a van that takes you to the door saves time and coordination.
The birthplace of the Zeppelin
Friedrichshafen is closely tied to aviation history. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin built his first rigid airships here at the turn of the twentieth century, and the town grew into an industrial centre for aircraft, engines and later automotive and engineering companies. The Zeppelin Museum, set in the former harbour station on the lakefront, presents a reconstructed section of the Hindenburg airship alongside an art collection. On the edge of town, the Dornier Museum next to the airport covers the history of another pioneering aircraft manufacturer.
On clear days, modern airships carrying passengers on sightseeing flights can sometimes be seen over the lake, a reminder that this heritage is still alive.
Trade fairs and business visits
Friedrichshafen has a large exhibition centre that hosts international trade fairs throughout the year, covering fields such as aviation, outdoor sports, cycling and leisure. During these events, hotels across the region fill quickly, and many visitors stay in neighbouring towns around the lake. If you are exhibiting or attending, book your transfer early, tell us the hall or entrance you need, and consider a chauffeur by the hour (minimum two hours) to move between hotels, stands and evening events.
The town is also home to engineering firms and suppliers, so business travel continues outside fair periods. Companies can request an invoice for every transfer, which simplifies expense reporting.
The lakeside and Lake Constance trips
The lakeside promenade is Friedrichshafen's main attraction for leisure visitors, with views across the water to the Swiss and Austrian Alps on clear days. A viewing tower at the harbour offers a wider panorama. Ferries cross the lake to Romanshorn in Switzerland and connect with towns along the shore, making it easy to explore without a car.
Nearby highlights include Meersburg, with its old castle and terraced vineyards above the water; the island of Mainau, known for its gardens and flowers; Lindau, the island town at the eastern end of the lake; and Unteruhldingen, with its reconstructed prehistoric pile dwellings, part of a UNESCO-listed site. Further inland, the baroque churches of Upper Swabia are a short drive away.
Where to stay depends on the purpose of your trip. The lakefront and town centre suit leisure visitors who want to walk to the ferries and the museum, while trade fair visitors often prefer hotels on the road to the exhibition centre or in nearby towns such as Meersburg, Langenargen or Ravensburg, a short drive inland.
Practical tips

- During large trade fairs, plan extra time for road access to the exhibition centre.
- The lake can be misty in autumn and winter; the Alps are most visible on clear, dry days.
- Cycling paths circle the lake; tell us if you are bringing bikes.
