Choosing a resort that fits your family
The right summer base depends on the ages of your children and how far you want to travel. With toddlers, a short transfer and a resort with gentle walks and playgrounds matter most: Megève and the villages of the Portes du Soleil, such as Les Gets and Morzine, are close to Geneva, with lakes, flower meadows and plenty of mountain restaurants. For older children who want adventure, Chamonix offers glaciers, rack railways and a huge choice of trails, as well as via ferrata routes and climbing for teenagers. In Switzerland, Villars-sur-Ollon above the Rhône valley has a relaxed, family atmosphere, and Champex-Lac, a small village around a mountain lake, is perfect for a quiet week. Car-free Zermatt and Saas-Fee give children rare freedom on the streets, with the Matterhorn or a ring of glaciers as a backdrop.
Activities children love
Summer resorts have adapted to families in a big way. Many have themed walking trails with games and information boards, short enough for small legs and often ending at a playground or a farm. Summer toboggan runs and alpine coasters, mountain carts and scooters on gentle descents, rope parks in the forest and lakes with pedalos fill the afternoons. Mountain bikers will find everything from flat family routes to purpose-built bike parks. Natural swimming lakes, such as the one at Les Gets, and the bathing beaches of Lake Annecy are ideal on hot days. Older children can try canyoning, rafting or paragliding in tandem with qualified professionals.
- Under six: playground trails, pony rides, lake beaches, short lift rides
- Six to twelve: summer luge, rope parks, easy via ferrata, family bike routes
- Teenagers: climbing, mountain biking, canyoning, rafting, tandem paragliding
Hiking with children
Lifts make the high mountains accessible: ride up, walk across a balcony path with views, and ride down again. This avoids the steep climbs that put children off walking. Choose routes with a clear goal, such as a lake, a hut serving lunch or a viewpoint, and plan short days. The weather changes fast at altitude, even in July, so carry rain jackets, warm layers, sun cream and plenty of water. Very high viewpoints, such as those above Chamonix or Zermatt, can be cold and the thin air tiring for small children; keep visits short and descend if anyone feels unwell. Mountain huts are friendly to families and a meal on a terrace above the valley is often the highlight of the day.
Day trips and rainy-day options
Summer in the Alps sometimes brings afternoon storms or a rainy day, and it helps to have alternatives. Annecy's lake and old town, Montreux and the castle of Chillon, scenic trains such as the Gornergrat above Zermatt or the Montenvers railway to the Mer de Glace, and indoor pools or thermal baths are all good fallbacks. Some resorts offer guest cards with free or reduced access to lifts and activities during your stay; ask your accommodation what is included.
Planning the travel day
A smooth arrival sets the tone. Book flights that land early enough to reach the resort before dinner, especially for longer transfers. Bring snacks and something to do in the car, and plan a short stop for drives over two hours. Tell us your children's ages so the right seats are installed, and mention buggies, bikes or large bags in advance.
Booking your family transfer
Reserve online at a fixed price per vehicle, displayed before you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The Mercedes V-Class carries up to seven passengers and ten bags, ideal for two families or grandparents travelling together; the Sprinter minibus suits larger groups. Child seats and boosters are provided on request. Your chauffeur meets you in Geneva Airport arrivals with a name sign, follows your flight and waits if it is late. Return transfers can be booked at the same time. For help, call or WhatsApp +41 78 346 56 77, or book directly with AirportsTransfers.ch online.
