Honeymoon between lakes and Alps: Switzerland and Italy combined

A romantic route from Geneva into the Swiss Alps and down to Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, with ideas for how many nights to spend where and how to travel between them.

A honeymoon that starts in the Swiss Alps and ends on the Italian lakes is one of the most rewarding routes from Geneva: a few nights in a mountain village such as Zermatt (Täsch is 231 km, about 2 h 35 from the airport) followed by Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, near Milan, which is 329 km and about 3 h 50 from GVA. AirportsTransfers.ch can drive the whole route in stages, so you never handle luggage on trains.

  • Route: Geneva, the Valais, over the Alps to Lake Maggiore, then Lake Como
  • Ideal length: ten days to two weeks
  • Season: late spring to early autumn for lake life
  • Mood: mountain air first, Italian lake gardens and villas to finish
  • Getting home: fly back from Milan or return to Geneva

Why combine the Alps and the lakes

The contrast is the attraction. Alpine villages offer crisp air, high trails, glaciers and evenings by the fire, while the Italian lakes bring palm trees, terraced gardens, villas and long dinners by the water. The two are surprisingly close: the road from the Valais crosses the Alps and drops down to Lake Maggiore in a few hours, and you feel the climate change as you descend into Italy. Planning the trip in this direction means you finish somewhere warm and slow, which is exactly what most couples want at the end of a wedding season.

The Alpine chapter

Zermatt is the obvious first stop, with its car-free village and the Matterhorn above it. A ride on the Gornergrat railway, a walk to a mountain lake and a dinner in a chalet restaurant make a memorable first few days. If you prefer something quieter, Crans-Montana on its sunny plateau (190 km, about 2 h 15) or a small village in the Val d'Hérens or Val d'Anniviers offer peace and views. Whichever village you choose, book a table at least once in a mountain restaurant reached on foot or by lift, where you can sit outside with a blanket and watch the light change on the peaks; it is the kind of moment couples remember long after the trip. In winter, Courmayeur on the Italian side of Mont Blanc (107 km, about 1 h 30 from GVA through the tunnel) is another way to blend the two countries, and it gives an early taste of Italian food and atmosphere.

Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore stretches from Switzerland into Italy. Its western shore, around Stresa, looks out on the Borromean Islands, where palazzi and formal gardens sit almost on the water. Boats cross to the islands and to small towns along the shore, and the whole lake has a gentle, old-fashioned elegance. It is an easy first Italian stop after the mountains, and from the Valais the drive over the Simplon Pass is itself part of the experience, with views over gorges and high pastures before you drop into Italy. Once there, the pace slows: mornings in a garden, an afternoon boat to an island, an evening walk along the waterfront when the day-trippers have gone. Spring and early summer are the time for camellias and azaleas in the lakeside gardens, while September brings warm water and softer light.

Lake Como

Lake Como is narrower and more dramatic, with steep mountains plunging into the water and villages stacked along the shore. Bellagio, on the point where the lake divides, is the classic romantic base, but Varenna and Menaggio are equally appealing and well connected by ferry. Villas with famous gardens open to visitors, boat trips by the hour reveal the shoreline from the water, and evenings are made for aperitivo on a terrace. From Como, Milan is close, which makes it easy to fly home from there or spend a final night in the city for shopping and the cathedral.

Pacing and practical tips

Allow at least three nights in each place; fewer turns a honeymoon into a series of check-ins. A typical plan is three or four nights in the mountains, three on Lake Maggiore and four on Lake Como. Summer is busy on the lakes, so May, June and September are often more pleasant, while July and August suit couples who want maximum warmth. Keep in mind that the route crosses the border into Italy, so carry your passports. Travelling by private car between bases means you can stop for lunch in a mountain village, take photos at viewpoints and arrive at the door of each hotel, which is especially welcome with honeymoon luggage.
