Arriving in formal wear: transfers straight to an event

Flying into Geneva for a wedding or gala on the same day? How to plan tight timings, carry garment bags and find somewhere to change en route.

Flying into Geneva and going straight to a wedding or gala is possible, but it works best with a generous time buffer, formal clothes carried in a garment bag in the cabin, and a plan for where you will change. With a chauffeur waiting in arrivals, you can go directly to a hotel room, a venue's changing area or the event itself, whether in Geneva, on the lake at Montreux (91 km, about 1 h 05) or in a mountain village. AirportsTransfers.ch tracks your flight so a delay eats into your buffer, not into a search for a taxi.

  • Buffer: leave several hours between scheduled landing and the event
  • Outfit: in a garment bag in the cabin, never in checked luggage
  • Change: hotel day room, venue changing area or your accommodation
  • Vehicle: a sedan for couples; a V-Class gives space for dresses and suits
  • Plan B: a slightly earlier flight, or arriving the evening before

How much buffer do you really need?

Flights are reliable, but a delay of an hour is common enough that it should never put your arrival at risk. Then add the time to taxi to the gate, pass passport control and, if you have checked bags, wait at the belt. For a ceremony in central Geneva, the drive itself is short; for a venue on the Riviera or in the mountains, it may be an hour or two. As a rule, plan to arrive at your changing place at least two hours before you need to be seen by the guests, and more if hair or make-up is involved.

For important roles, such as bride, groom, best man or parents, arriving the evening before is the safer choice. The rest of the guests can more easily take a morning flight on the day.

Carrying formal wear on the plane

A suit, dress or uniform should travel in a garment bag in the cabin. Lost or delayed checked luggage is rare but possible, and there is no fixing it on a wedding morning. Many airlines allow a folded garment bag as hand luggage; some cabin crews will hang it on board if space allows, but do not count on it. Pack shoes and accessories in your carry-on as well. A small travel steamer or a crease-release spray can rescue an outfit after a few hours folded.

  • Fold jackets inside out along the shoulder seams to reduce creases
  • Roll ties and place them inside shoes
  • Pack delicate dresses with tissue paper between folds
  • Keep cufflinks, jewellery and medication on your person

Where to change

The easiest option is a hotel room near the venue. If check-in is later than you need, ask the hotel about a day room or early access. Many wedding venues, from lakeside estates to mountain hotels, also have a room where guests or the wedding party can change; it is worth asking the organisers. Changing at the airport is possible but not ideal: washrooms are busy, and an outfit put on at the terminal then spends the drive sitting creased in a car.

If the venue is far, consider stopping at your accommodation first. Your chauffeur can wait while you change if you book by the hour (minimum two hours), and then drive you on to the event without a second booking.

Travelling in the car once dressed

A spacious car makes a difference when you are wearing a long dress or a morning suit. A Mercedes S-Class or V-Class gives room to sit without crushing fabric, and the chauffeur will keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature. For groups of guests, a V-Class or Sprinter can deliver everyone together, which is often welcome at venues with limited parking. Let the chauffeur know the exact entrance and any arrival time agreed with the organisers; for ceremonies, punctuality is part of the courtesy.

Weddings in Switzerland and the French Alps often include photographs outdoors, so think about the weather too. In late spring or autumn, an umbrella and a warm wrap in the car can save an outfit, and in the mountains, comfortable shoes for the walk from the car to the chapel or terrace may be wise.

After the celebration

Weddings and galas often end late. Book the return to your hotel or the airport at the same time as the arrival, or reserve a chauffeur by the hour for the evening. The service runs 24/7, so a late finish is no problem, and nobody needs to decide who will drive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go straight from Geneva Airport to a wedding on the same day?
Yes, with a comfortable buffer. Allow for possible delays and passport control, and plan to reach your changing place at least two hours before you need to be at the event.
Where can I change into formal wear?
Ideally at a hotel room near the venue or a changing area at the venue itself. A chauffeur booked by the hour can wait while you change and then drive you on.
Can a group of guests travel together?
Yes. A Mercedes V-Class takes up to seven passengers and a Sprinter minibus suits larger groups, which helps at venues with limited parking.
