To set the pick-up time for an early flight from Geneva, start from the time your airline wants you at the airport, then subtract the normal drive time and add a safety margin for weather and roads. From Lausanne (about 45 minutes) the margin can be modest; from Verbier, Courchevel or Zermatt it should be generous, especially in winter. AirportsTransfers.ch runs 24/7, so a pick-up at four in the morning is entirely normal.
- Step 1: check how early your airline recommends arriving for your flight
- Step 2: add the normal drive time from your hotel or chalet
- Step 3: add a margin for snow, ice and border or airport queues
- Step 4: allow a few minutes for loading luggage and children
- Tip: agree the time with your driver the day before
Start from the airport, not the hotel
The most reliable way to plan is to work backwards. First, find out how early you should be at the terminal. Many airlines suggest around two hours for European flights and longer for long-haul routes, but recommendations vary, and bag-drop counters may open and close at set times before departure. Early in the morning, the first wave of flights from Geneva leaves within a short window, so security and check-in can be busier than people expect at that hour, particularly on winter weekends and at the start of school holidays.
Once you know your target arrival time at the airport, you can calculate backwards with confidence.
Typical drive times to build on
Use realistic road times from Geneva Airport as your base. From Geneva city the drive is short. From Lausanne it is about 45 minutes, from Montreux about 1 h 05 and from Annecy around 40 minutes. In the mountains, allow about 1 h 15 from Chamonix, about 1 h 10 from Megève, around 2 h from Verbier or Gstaad, about 2 h 15 from Crans-Montana or Courchevel and around 2 h 45 from Val d'Isère. For Zermatt, which is car-free, the road journey starts at Täsch, about 2 h 35 from the airport, and you must add the shuttle train down from Zermatt to Täsch beforehand.
These are normal-condition figures. Early-morning journeys often run smoothly because traffic is light, but that should not tempt you to cut the margin.
Early-hour road conditions
The coldest part of the day is just before dawn. In winter, roads that were wet the previous evening can be icy at four or five in the morning, and fresh snow may have fallen overnight. Snow ploughs and gritters start early on main routes, but side roads to chalets may not yet be cleared. Fog is also common in the Geneva basin and along Lake Geneva in the colder months, slowing traffic on the motorway.
For mountain departures, a margin of 30 to 60 minutes beyond the normal drive time is sensible in winter, more when heavy snow is forecast. From city locations in good weather, a smaller cushion is usually enough. If you are crossing the border from France, remember that occasional checks can cause brief queues even early in the day.
A worked example
Suppose you are flying out of Geneva at 7.30 on a February Saturday, staying in Verbier. Your airline suggests being at the airport two hours before departure, so the target is 5.30. The normal drive is about 2 h, which gives 3.30. Adding a winter margin of 45 minutes brings the pick-up to around 2.45, and allowing a further quarter of an hour for loading skis and waking sleepy children suggests a pick-up at about 2.30. It sounds early, but arriving relaxed with time for breakfast at the airport is far better than racing a check-in deadline on icy roads.
The same method works from a city hotel. For a 7.00 flight from a hotel in Lausanne, with a two-hour recommendation and a 45-minute drive, a pick-up around 4.00 leaves a comfortable cushion for fog on the motorway or a queue at bag drop.
Getting ready the night before
Pack the evening before and leave luggage by the door. Keep passports, tickets and phones together. Check out of your accommodation in advance if the reception will not be open, and make sure you know how to leave keys. Set two alarms. Confirm the pick-up time and address with your driver the day before; if you are in a chalet with a tricky access road, describe where the vehicle can wait. Dress children in comfortable clothes they can sleep in on the journey.
