Getting to Combloux from Geneva Airport
Combloux is one of the easiest resorts to reach from Geneva. After crossing into France, the route follows the A40 motorway almost all the way to Sallanches, the market town at the foot of the village. From the motorway exit, a short climb of a few kilometres brings you up to Combloux, which sits on a sunny shelf above the valley. Because so much of the journey is motorway and the final road is short and well maintained, it is less vulnerable to heavy snowfall than many destinations. The main source of delay is the A40 itself on peak Saturdays, when traffic for Chamonix, Saint-Gervais and Megève all shares the same road. If you are staying in one of the hamlets around the village, your driver will plan the last stretch to your door.
The ski area: Combloux, Megève and La Giettaz
Combloux's slopes link directly with the Jaillet sector of Megève and with La Giettaz, forming a sizeable network that is part of the wider Évasion Mont-Blanc area. The terrain is mostly rolling, with wide, open runs and patches of forest, ideal for intermediates who enjoy long, scenic cruising. The real selling point is the view: on clear days Mont Blanc and the Chamonix needles fill the horizon from almost every run, which is why Combloux is often described as the pearl of Mont Blanc. Beginners have gentle zones near the village, and the lift network is generally uncrowded compared with Megève's busier sectors. Expert skiers will find more challenge elsewhere in the Évasion Mont-Blanc network or with a guide off-piste, but for relaxed holiday skiing Combloux is a pleasant base.
The village and where to stay
Combloux has kept its character as a traditional Savoyard village, centred on a church with a distinctive onion-shaped bell tower. Chalets and small residences spread across the sunny slopes, many with uninterrupted views of the Mont Blanc massif. The village has shops, cafés and restaurants, and a natural swimming lake that is a summer highlight. For a livelier evening, Megève is just a short drive away. Accommodation close to the village centre or to the main lift departures is the most convenient, while hamlets on the hillside offer more space and quiet. Non-skiers can enjoy snowshoeing, winter walks, sledging and the boutiques of Megève nearby.
When to go and practical tips
The season usually runs from mid-December to the end of March or early April. Combloux is at a moderate altitude, so snow cover can be variable in mild winters, though the higher sectors connecting towards Megève tend to hold up well. January is usually quiet and offers crisp, clear days with the best views. February is busy with school holidays, and the A40 can be very slow around Sallanches on Saturdays. Arriving on a Sunday or catching an early flight can save a great deal of time. Snow chains and winter tyres are required in French mountain areas in winter. Pack ski equipment in proper bags and note it at booking so a suitable vehicle is allocated.
The return journey
On a Saturday in high season, leave about three hours before your flight; on other days two and a half hours is usually enough. The short drive down to Sallanches is quick, and the motorway is generally the only bottleneck. If you are flying very early, a night-time transfer is fast and smooth.
Because Combloux is so close to the motorway, it also works well for short breaks. Travellers landing on a Thursday evening can be in their chalet in little more than an hour and on the slopes the next morning, and a Sunday afternoon departure still leaves time for a final morning on the snow. For business visitors to Geneva who want to add a couple of ski days, that proximity makes a real difference.
